Meth use in early pregnancy -- anyone have experience with this?
We were presented with a situation where the potential birthmom has used Meth during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
She stopped using as soon as she found out she was pregnant, and soon after was incarcerated for breaking parole. Therefore, we know she has not used after that point. She had an ultrasound during the 2nd trimester that shows the baby is developing normally and everything appears fine. She is due in 4 weeks.... Does anyone have any experience with this? I've read a lot online, but want personal stories. Has anyone adopted a child that the birthparent used Meth? Thanks so much! |

My husband and I were presented similar case in July 2005. We prayed about the situation, discussed it among ourselves and decided to take a risk in pursuing the adoption of our child (the case was presented to several families before us; all families refused to take the risk). In August of 2005, our beautiful and healthy baby girl was born. Our daughter who is now 20 months old can recite her ABC's, count to 20 and spell her name. She is an active, bright child who keeps us on our toes. With any pregnancy, there is no guarentee regarding the health of the child.

Advice
I would advise you to contact your OB/GYN and do a phone consult or if your lawyer has a release from the birthmom for medical records you can also consult with her OB/GYN if she has a current one, but the best bet would be for your lawyer to get the records and have your OB look over them as a courtesy. Be aware, most lawyers don't want to go the extra mile, but you need to be persistent. Most OB/GYN's believe and support adoption and more than likely will welcome this and understand. This is an uncommon practice b/c most people don't know they have that right when requested and proper paper work signed. I have done that in all my adoption journeys. That would be the wisest thing to do. You can also request a level 2 ultrasound for deformities. This is covered by medicaid. There are so many things that can be done in the beginning medically speaking to answer a lot of these questions. You just have to know what to ask and how to go about it. I hope this helps.

Both my boys were exposed to met thru the entire pregnancies. They had very mild delays...promarily due to other circumstances like malnutrition and lack of nurturing before placement. Overall, they are amazing, bright, articulate children. True blessings!
