I am a mother of two boys. My oldest son had no contact with his biological father (Jim) for four years. Jim had not paid any child support either even though it was court ordered. My husband wanted to adopt our son when my son was five years old. At the time my son only knew him as his father. I asked lawyers to take my case. They said that they couldn't help me unless I found the whereabouts of the biological father. by the time I found him he said that he would not consent to the adoption and started immediately paying child support. He quickly came up with the amount to cover all back child support also. Therefore my husband wasn't able to adopt our son. I have a suggestion for a proposal for reform in the adoption law. I was wondering if I could get some feed back from others as to how they think about it. My proposal for a reform in the law is that legal notice and consent for a stepparent adoption of a child shouldn't be necessary from a non-custodial or absent parent, of a child who willfully neglected, abandoned, or failed to pay child support for his or her child in a time period of over three months. I hope that someday with the support of others this reform will be passed.
