What to expect next on stepparent adoption

I now understand that our attorney is going to file the petition under abandonment and have him served. Exactly what does this mean! Will the biological father be at the hearing? Can he fight the adoption at the hearing? Can he at that point request visitation after all these years? Exactly what should we expect? Worried about the outcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
