Just Starting out in CA

Hello, my husband is trying to adopt my two sons and we can't afford a lawyer so we'd like to try to do it ourselves. My ex hasn't seen the boys in over seven years but I'm not sure he would consent to the adoption, he is arrogant and likes to have his way no matter what. But he's been in and out of jail several times over the last few years and I don't even know where he is now and they boys don't want to see him or talk to him. They call my new husband "dad" and they really want him to adopt them. I could really use to advice/ support. Thanks

You ex does not have to consent to the adoption. He already abandoned your son's seven years ago. It should be farely easy. But I definately suggest you talk to an attorney or paralegal or the family courts in your county for advice on where to start. You can also check out this book "Do Your Own California Adoption Nolo's Guidde for Stepparents & Domestic Partners". The laws differ in CA from county to county but the book presents a good example and includes lots of forms you can use. I am also in CA. You can read up on my case under the thread Adoption Started or this link

I hope this helps you a bit and good luck. We would love for you to keep us updated.
