I am about to get married and my fiance would like to adopt my children but we are unsure what steps we need to take. We would like to do it without an attorney for expense reasons if this is possible. My twins father has already signed away his rights. Can anyone please tell me what paperwork is needed and what steps we need to take. I have also heard that we will have to wait six months before he can legally adopt them. Is this true?

The length of time you must be married before you can file for a stepparent adoption varies by state (it's one year in many states). It is a good idea to have an attorney for this. Also keep in mind that many states require a home study and usually you must pay for this (at least in my state that's the way it works).
