Interstate stepparent adoption…
I’m not sure if this is the best place to post my question, but I’m sure ya’ll redirect me if necessary.
I live in Virginia and my ex wife lives in Michigan. My daughter’s stepfather wishes to adopt her and I have agreed to consent. My ex wife’s lawyer has told me to pursue a “referee” to handle my end of things here in Va to avoid making a trip to Michigan, but I don’t know where to start. Who would help me with such a thing? Where do I start (besides here)? Any direction would be appreciated, thank you! JK |

Normally (depends on the state) the proceeding would be in the state where the child to be adopted lives (along with the step-parent who's going to adopt). Each state has their own rules on jurisdiction as well as how long one needs to live in the state/county before a proceeding can be started.
