I’m not sure if this is the best place to post my question, but I’m sure ya’ll redirect me if necessary.

I live in Virginia and my ex wife lives in Michigan. My daughter’s stepfather wishes to adopt her and I have agreed to consent. My ex wife’s lawyer has told me to pursue a “referee” to handle my end of things here in Va to avoid making a trip to Michigan, but I don’t know where to start. Who would help me with such a thing? Where do I start (besides here)? Any direction would be appreciated, thank you! JK

Normally (depends on the state) the proceeding would be in the state where the child to be adopted lives (along with the step-parent who's going to adopt). Each state has their own rules on jurisdiction as well as how long one needs to live in the state/county before a proceeding can be started.
