Former step-parent adoption?
My ex M. and I broke up (never married) in 1999. Her daughter A. (10) biological father is a deadbeat and left within a year. I have raised A. as my own since M. and I were dating in late 1995, and have taken her every week since we broke up. M. petitioned for limited guardianship for me, and it was granted recently. However, I was told by an attorney that since M. and I are not married, a judge would not grant me an adoption of A. unless we also terminate M.'s rights, which we don't want to do. Is anyone else in this situation?
