Update on Step-parent adoption

Our step-parent adoption was denied and now we are in the process of appeal. The adoption code in Michigan is poorly written and states that you have to have 2 years no contact and no support. He's only started paying regular support in the last year and a half because they charged him a felony for not paying. The even worse news is that we have a trial for parenting time on May 20. The bf won't consent to the adoption, hasn't contacted in any way for almost 6 years (my son is 8 now), and conveniently filed a motion for parenting time 3 months AFTER we filed for the step-parent adoption! Right now, we're trying to get this motion for parenting time suspended until we can get the appeal for the step-parent adoption finished. Has anyone had similar experience with this?

Angry Step-parent adoption in Michigan

I'm really interested to hear about your case, because we are also in Michigan and are just about ready to start the same process. I completely agree that the adoption code is poorly written--how can we ever show 2 years of non-support if they garnish bf's wages?? I'll be really interested to hear how your appeal goes. We have the same situation: almost no contact, but his wages have been garnished for the last six to eight months, and so that will probably count against us. I'm thinking about starting up a lobbying campaign to have the legislature deal with this. Please let us know how your appeal goes and good luck!
