I am 20 years old and I want my stepdad to adopt me. About 10 years ago when my stepdad and my mom were married, he tried to adopt my brother and I, but my biological father would not give his consent. My biological dad lives about 20 minutes away from me and the only time I see him or talk to him is if I go visit him and his new family. Every since I turned 18 and he no longer has to pay child support, he no longer contacts me or tries to contact me. The only time I see him is in Wal-Mart or passing him on the highway. I haven't even recieved a card for Christmas or my birthday. The only dad I know is my stepdad and he has helped my mom raise me since I was 5 or 6. I am a 1st semester junior college and my mom and stepdad has helped this far.
Now that I am 20 years old, I was wondering is there anyway he can adopt me without my biological dad's consent. Please respond ASAP!!!! ![]() I live in North Carolina. |

My understanding is that as an adult, your biofather does not have to give consent. You need to check with an attorney to find out if your state has legal adult adoptions. Good luck!!!!

THANKS!!!
Thank you for your information about my adoption. I went to the clerk of court and she gave me all the information and forms I needed for the adult adoption. Now my stepfather and I are on our way.

I am glad that you are getting what you want. My daughter from my first marriage wanted to have her step-father's, my husband, last name. She had not seen her biological father in about 4 years and the last time she saw him, he was rude, hateful, and condesending. she refused to go back. She was 12 years old and had that right in our state, which, is North Carolina as well.
This past November 25th, 2004, her last name was changed and he signed it but only after I had signed away child support via child support enforcement. He was told three times by our caseworker that I could refile later for the support, which is what my daughter wanted me to do. She feels that he should not be allowed to get out of support just because he doesn't want to have anything to do with his first or second children from his first and second marriages. So, he signed and her amended birth certificate came in a few weeks ago. She was walking on cloud 9. We even had a party. I hope you get what you want. Had her biological father not signed, she would have done what you are doing now. She is 16, btw. |
