birth certificate

Once a step parent adoption is finalized, does the child receive a new birth certificate with the adopted father listed as the father? Or do they receive an amended birth certificate from the old one (the one page document becomes two)?

Re: birth certificate

I guess it could depend on the laws of the state, but for the state in which my children were born (the adoption took place in another state), we received all new birth certificates with the adoptive father listed as the father. There is nothing on the certificate that says it is amended. However, looks different than the old birth certificates that I have. I don't know if that is because it is an amended certificate or if it's just what is being used now.

New certificate

Yes it is a new certificate, not amended. After the adoption the bio father is no longer listed on the birth certificate. They look different because now everything is on the computer so they just print them off instead of typing them up. Did you send a form after your adoption was finalized to the state. They need a copy of the final adopton forms and the for filled out requesting a new birth certificate. If you did then you should receive it with in a couple of weeks from the time you sent it. If not talk to the court administrator where you had court. They can help you get it sent out. Good luck and Congrats!!

Mine is new

It says my Dad is my father. I was so happy when I saw it I cried. I still tear up looking at it.
