Okay, I don't think we are in danger of loosing it anytime soon. As far as I can tell from my research, no one is currently challanging it. They are adding to it by ensuring Native American children's need are met.
I don't think it could hurt to go ahead and write your local congress person and let them know you support it. You can find out who he/she is on www.house.gov The Keeping Children and Families Safe Act, which is currently going through the bill process I think, is about preventing abuse and setting up better program, not giving birth parents more time, at least as far as I can tell. It is a new proposal that is going through congress/senate now. Basically the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 says children can be in foster care 15 of the past 22 months and then they can TPR on birth parents to free the child for adoption. This way kids don't grow up in foster care. Dave Camp was the sponser of the bill. His address is 137 Cannon House Office Building, Washington, D.D. 20515. You could write him and thank him. There is just so much talk on TV here about how 15 months isn't long enough for birthparents, and I think it is more then enough time, I would hate to see this law go away. |
