diagnosis codes for FAS

We got our full report in the mail today and I am MORE confused than ever!! He is given the code 2323; I looked on the university of WA page and it broke it down to mean neruobehavioral disorder, sentinel physical findings, and alcohol exposed. Can someone please explain that to me in plain English????

I found this page saying it means "alcohol exposed". Maybe that means it's not full blown FAS????

That is what I had found also, but I am not understanding what it means...we knew he was alcohol exposed.

At the bottom of the web page it said, "The 4-Digit Diagnostic Code reflects the magnitude of expression of four key diagnostic components of FAS in the order growth, facial phenotype, CNS damage/dysfunction and alcohol exposure. Each component is measured on a four-point Likert scale, thus producing 256 possible combinations of 4-Digit Diagnostic Codes. These codes are collapsed into 22 diagnostic categories as presented above."

Your son falls under one of the catagories that has known alcohol exposure. Sounds like it means that he has some stand-out features, as well as the neuro related behaviors that go with alcohol exposure. Possibly partial FAS? The letters for the different things keep changing. ARND, FASD are the updated versions. FAS and FAE still seem to be used, though. And we were told during training that a child can have partial FAS with some physical indicators as well as some level of invisible brain impairment. Some kids have no physical indicators with very significant brain impairment, others have full FAS features but very little brain impairment. There's all kinds of combos that can go together with kids who were prenatally exposed.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the codes... they are just a nuisance for physicians to get the visits, procedures, tests etc covered by insurance. A diagnosis is needed so the put a code that they know will make it a covered service. You should just discuss it with your physician and get the scoop from him/her!

isn't it just thrilling to get the results and have more questions then you started with! Yes this is me being sarcastic. I would definalty contact your physician. Here are the only "codes" I know...

FAS- full facial features and brain impariment
P-FAS- Partial- fas/ Some of the facial features and brain issues
ARND- Alcohol related neurological disorder- No facial features but still has the brain damage.

All these fall under the FASD umbrella term. We have 1 with P-Fas and 2 that are ARND....none are all that fun

Good luck and don't keep us waiting after to figure it out. Wish i could have been more help
