Help: SSN Change?
I remember quite clearly that someone, a gentleman I believe, had a lot of information about how to change your child's SSN. I finalized the adoption of my 7 year old DD, R, this week and I would like to make this change. Could that person share that information again please? Thank you!

I think it depends on where you are and the worker. I have 2 sets of bio brothers; 3 different adoption dates and when I went to change the ss numbers, I was told the SSA doesn't do that. and if the child knows he/she is adopted, it isn't done. now both sets of boys have siblings with other families and they WERE allowed to change the SS numbers. go figure!!

The new birth certificate has to come back first, and the social security administration has a policy that anyone can change their ssn if they have been the victim of harassment, abuse, or life endangerment. This is found in the Program Operations Manuel System (POMS) under Chapter RM 00205. They told us to bring a medical record showing his new name, my driver's license, a certified copy of the adoption decree, and the new birth certificate. We're still holding on the new birth certificate. Hope this helps!

This was the case with us as well. My son was 4 when we finalized but he certainly knew he was adopted. I went in person to the office and explained that he was adopted through the foster care system and we needed a new number. We weren't given a hassle and the lady was really nice and gave J a sucker. ![]()

They never asked us if our kids knew, or not, and we didn't offer the info. We had to have the adoption decree and the new birth cert, and then our ID as well.
For what it's worth, I think how difficult it is to accomplish depends on the worker at the window, too.

You know.....when we adopted the older kids (3 in total) we asked to have their original numbers changed. It was no big deal for two of them...and the third one wasn't changed, only because at that time, I wasn't sure it could be done. FWIW, it's a good idea to do this anyway as far as I'm concerned. I was told it can then assure no one else---in their past--- tries to claim your child when filing taxes.......
Sincerely, Linny |

We simply explained to the person at the window that our children were adopted from foster care, their bios knew their old numbers and they needed new ones for security reasons and POOF! New names, new numbers... its like my kids are in the witness protection program
