Speaking of Movies...

So we had a 3 day snow storm here and lots of down time. I had gotten the kids a group movie gift for Easter and we hadn't watched it yet, so perfect! Right?

The movie?

Drumroll please....

Airplane!

Now, let me just say first that I remember this movie being funny and silly. I saw it with my family at 10 years of age when it came out in 1980 and over the years I've seen bits of it again on T.V. So according to my memory, this PG movie was fine.

Funny what you don't remember from movies, eh? LOL!
I totally didn't remember that there was the scene of a woman's breasts, the inappropriate inneudos & comments, the totally politically incorrect stuff now etc. Now that I look back on it, I think I remembered the "Don't call me Shirley" line best of all.

So now my 8, 9 , 11 & 12 year old kids have seen it, they loved it, they (much to my chagrin at some things) GOT it and just found it completely hilarious.

After it was over I asked dh if he remembered the nudity etc. and he said "of course!" Sigh...men.

I think I better brush up more on "childhood movie memories" before the next one, eh?

LOL! Lyla is getting to where she likes to watch regular movies now. So we let her watch The Wedding planner..harmless right? The movie itself was fine, but now we get an endless question of "momma when are you and daddy getting married" or she asks her dady the same thing. We try to make her unerstand that we ARE married..but she just doesn't get it.

So even the innocent movies can come with bad things.

Funny how men remember stuff like that. Ask them what color her hair was..and they don't know.

Now, now, Lylac...

If I remember my airplane nudity correctly, the bosoms in question were sen streaking across the screen in a panic scene, with the lady's head cut off by the top border of the screen. Thus, her face never appears on camera.

Of course, we could start a rumor that that was really Lylac in an uncredited early role....

If you do Netflix (or maybe you can access it even if you don't) I have found their reviews to be really helpful jogging my memory about what really happened in some of those '80s movies.

We had an unfortunate incident in which my 10 year old ended up sleeping in our room for days after watching an Indiana Jones movie. I had forgotten about the spirits flying around and the guys face melting off. oooops!

Debbie - I typically look at Imdb.com and it's great for that stuff. I just truly hadn't thought to look up reviews because I seriously didn't remember this stuff! (I am NOT old!)

I'll not make that mistake again though.

My kids loved the Indy movies, but my youngest had to cover his eyes over those scenes.

Think I need to preview "10" again? ROFL! KIDDING.

Debbie - LOL My 18 year old son wouldn't watch the Indiana Jones movies for YEARS because he went to a sleepover when he was 10 and saw that one (I remember him crying the next day "the guys face melted-OFF). I think he finally watched all of them in a row last summer and Loved them.

The movie I let all my kids watch (with my conservative MIL over at the time of course) was "Forest Gump" - that one had a lot of stuff I had forgotten about (Strip Club, Half-Naked Girls making out with Lt.Dan, Drug use, language etc. etc.) that was a little inappropiate for the 10 yr old and 6 yr old (ESPECIALLY with judgmental MIL here).

Thanks for the heads-up on "Airplane" Crick - I'd forgotten that stuff to. I'll make sure NOT to have the kids watch it when MIL is here

In addition to IMDb and Netflix reviews, check CommonSenseMedia.org. They have reviews of movies, TV shows, games, books, etc., written by both parents and kids specifically addressing the content and for what ages it's appropriate. That usually my first resource if I want to determine if something will be OK for my kids.

I have to say that we watched a movie today that all my kids loved and I was so excited because it marked that I can watch stuff that I enjoy with them. Today was Slumdog Millionaire - don't judge me. They all loved it. We recently watched Ferris Bueller and then oldest DS wrote a paper on it as his 'fave movie'...so dang excited. DD watched Legally Blonde the other day and we are watching Sweet Home Alabama tonight. I have an image of me creating bad children because of all this...but hey, I am TOTALLY over cartoons!

I find myself much more lenient with my second two than I was with my first two. I guess I got over trying to be the perfect mom, LOL. When my oldest was little a babysitter let him watch jurrasic park, I was so worried, I just knew he would have nightmares, he was like three or four. But when I talked to him about it, he had chosen to watch it from the point of view of the dinosaurs, and he was rooting for the dinosaurs so it wasn't scary at all. LOL

LOL - I did that with Airplane, too - remembered "don't call me Shirley" and June Cleaver talking jive, but completely forgot the drug and alcohol use, and the sex. They cut out a *lot* when they show it on tv, so when I rented it for C many years ago, I got quite the surprise!!!

I guess the part that I remember the most was the autopilot deflating... enough said.

Or, "Pour every light onto that runway." Or, "Check the radar range!" Or, "Clearance, Clarance! Roger Roger! What's our vector, victor?"

Those movies, along with the "Naked Gun" movies are some of my favorite funny movies.

We do this ALL the time, Crick. Only it's between the adults; my sis and bil will watch something and recommend it, but they almost always say, "We don't REMEMBER any language/content...." I guess we kind of self-edit and then forget the bits we don't like.

We got the movie "The Man Who Knew Too Little" on their recommend. ROFL We think it is a hilariously funny movie, but don't let the kids watch it yet and we still fast forward through some bits.

We think "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" is very funny...but we have the edited, taped off TV version. The full version is somewhat not appropriate for the younger audiences.

I always remember when the little girl says she likes her coffee black "like my men"

It's funny, because as the seventh of eight kids, I think my parents gave up trying to censor what I watched, haha! But I'll watch a movie today that I remember watching ALL THE TIME when I was growing up and thinking, "Wow! I don't remember THAT part!!!" Because of course, I just didn't understand it!!!

I know this is strange but I don't censor too much except for sex & "happy" drug effects. They've seen The Matrix, LOTR trilogy, Harry Potter, etc. and...all the Die Hard movies. Talk about violence and cussing! Yet, somehow I think that "out there" violence is like fantasy and the kids won't really relate. But breasts (natural part of a body, no?) and sex...I feel I have to monitor more.

Humor though...I'm just a sucker for it. Dh is just as bad b/c he let them watch some Monty Python! He fast forwarded though I don't know what all they saw.

I'm ruining my children. ROFL!
