Question Considering Adopting Medically Fragile Child

I've been a lurker on this board ever since we got licensed for foster/adopt in our state, and now I have a question for y'all. I just put in our home study for a sibling group from a different state than I am in. The little boy is medically fragile and will require major medical care for the rest of his life. What I am wondering is, since these kids are from out of state, will they still be eligible for Medicaid until they are 18? I know that if I adopted from our state foster care the child would have a subsidy and Medicaid until they turned 18, but I don't know how it works when you adopt from foster care from out of state. I never thought that I would even consider straight adoption like this, but these kids caught my heart when I saw them, but I know we would need help with the medical care. Would we still get help from our state even though they were adopted from a different state? I hope this makes sense, and I hope someone can help me make sense of it all! Thanks!

As part of any adoption, you must negotiate an adoption agreement, which would include the onetime reimburseable expenses (travel, legal fees, etc), a daily/monthly stipend, and medical insurance (medicaid). So once adopted, if it is part of the adoption agreement, then yes, the child would have medicaid until age 18.

Prior to the adoption, during the preadoptive placement stage, the child would have medicaid insurance because they are legally on the state's books. ICPC is completed as part of the placement process, which would outline which state's medicaid insurance will be utilized and what that entails/means, as well as other services the receiving state (your state) will do on behalf of the sending state (the state the child is in now).

Hope that makes sense!

Good luck!!!

We receive adoption subsidy from the sending state, and a medical card from our state. They worked it out with the sending state regarding finances for the medical card. Additionally you'd probably want to make sure that the child is Title IV-E eligible, as this has to do with federal funding.
