Home school day 2-need more rum

S did great yesterday, but D did not work today and S kept trying to entertain D instead of working on his school work. He enjoyed a fun version of write the wrong answers for Geography. Ugh.

It's not like we sit and do workbooks all day. I know S needs to move and we've got a good mix of things and lots of hands on and even take walking breaks.

Anytime anyone is in a room, he suddenly goes into performance mode as if he is on stage and everyone is watching him. Odd behavior.

I had him sit when he didn't want to work and went about my business and then sent him and his geography book to his room to reread the material and write me a detailed summary since answering a few simple questins was too difficult.

Oh well. I'll just have to jazz up his routine a little bit more to make it more fun for me and for him.

Send more rum quick!

P loved the computer stuff yesterday but today we had doctors appointments all morning and I went to lay down, cause I was stressed from the tests they did on me, and she finished all her work in one hour. However, it was not done correctly! She forgets the computer program keeps records it tells me when she exited out of an activity early, and also when she fails a quiz. So we will be redoing the same work tomorow, plus a little more.

Is it time for the next snptf get together yet?

S has a day off tomorrow cause I need to help my dad out. He has a few things he is suppose to do on his own but I won't hold my breath.

I'm not going to stress it cause my state does mandatory attendence by hours taught rather then days and it's year round. I told S if he wants a long summer break he best get busy when it's time to work!

I thought it was funny when I went to unenroll him yesterday cause the school had no idea what they were suppose to do and wondered if they were suppose to do an exit interview. I informed them that I wasn't even required to notify them except for the purpose of unenrolling if enrolled already.

I just need to get into a different routine. I use to be pretty good at dumping the schedule all different directions to keep the kids from sabatoging too often. I just need to get with it.

Well, he did the boring summaries I gave him and asked if he could try again. I told him no, I was busy. Then when he was having fun doing something else later, I went and got him to finish the days work. He did quickly and without complaint. He helped make his list of what he needs to do on his own tomorrow while I'm gone(D will be home).

So, hopefully, he was either testing me out or was just having an off day. I still want the rum, though.

I've got rum - sending your way!!

Glad to know it's based on hours and not days because otherwise you'd miss the next SNPTF Field Trip and we just can't have that!

If I end up homeschooling, I'm counting on Kretz to come over and shake me silly!

Hang in there and hopefully you both will find your groove soon!

Wow am excited for C to be able to work a little more independantly just so that I can have more time to get things done. Although when I am teaching her its the just about the only time we really get along nicely. After all, parents are the enemy not teachers! Teacher mode is less scary for her I guess.
Today I did manage to get her through a significant amount of work and do some tax prep at the same time, all the while researching the process for a private adoption. Lets see if I can do that much at the same time tomorrow.

Welcome once again to the homeschooling moms club. I'm glad he has decided to work (at least for that one day). I'm sending you rum because its necessary whether the kids are cooperating or not.

Where is my rum? DD hated the social studies and science we are doing. I had gotten some weather curriculum for dad to do with her (he got a weather station for Christmas) and I got some stuff on Russia for her, but it had not come in. Yesterday driving to an appointment we came up with an experiment. (she is trying to learn scientific method and having trouble) She is going to try for the next two weeks to be nice to her brothers. She is keeping a journal and her hypothisis is that they will be worse to her. So far she says it's really, really hard. The oldest one is fine, but the other two on either side of her she is either best friends with or fighting with, so she is really having to work hard to not argue with them. I am enjoying it. LOL Yesterday's journal entry said it went better than she had expected. We will see if she can keep it up.

I wish my dd had picked this hypothesis for her science experiment this fall! LOL! Alas...she picked a candle burning experiment basing a hypothesis on a certain brand of candle would burn quicker than the others. My house smelled like a mixture of lilacs, wintergreen, pumpkin and some kind of berry for 2 weeks! On their own, not so bad, but together? Echhh!

I'm out of rum, but I have wine...

Crick-stop drinking rum for breakfast!

I have no trouble finding history material but science is a pain. I thought I found a good book for that but it's too much busy work and way to much prep work.

I'm trying to figure out how to deal with sons comprehension issues. His vocabulary is behind where it should be which doesn't help.

If I read to him, he can comprehend. If he reads to himself or outloud, he doesn't retain the information even short term.

I'm reading "Do Hard Things" to him and have decided it should be required reading for 13-25year olds.

I'm not teaching today-we crammed everything in 4 days for this week(including an independent study day)

Is he reading too fast? My middle boy reads very well but when it comes to writing or discussing what he read, he has some trouble. Teachers say he reads too fast and isn't really grasping everything, just pieces. So now he is supposed to use a rubber grip on his index finger or use a book mark to make sure he reads one line/word at a time in efforts to slow him down.
