Special needs grants

We are waiting for our travel call to pick up our daughter. She has a special needs condition that will require reconstructive surgery.

We are both working parents and my wife will not be able to work for some time due to the surgery and recovery.

There seem to be a ton of grants available but a lot of them appear to be exceedingly difficult to get.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or suggest what grants people have had success with in the past. As we already have one son at home, time is short but any additional financial help would be greatly helpful.

thank you

A lot is going to depend on where your child is coming from and her condition. I don't know of grants, but if you are adopting from foster care there is medicaid and subsidys and such. If you are doing domestic private, you may be able to see if the child qualifies for disability or something. However, if like me you are adopting from another country, you sign a paper when you fill out your immigration paperwork that says you will not ask for government help with this child. Of course once the child is home, they are a citizen and when you have that paperwork technically they qualify for disability or medicaid or whatnot. However, I have heard of very few successes in getting that for foreign born children. I have also found no grants or anything. Some that help with the cost of bringing home a child, but none for once you are home. Your own insurance does have to cover the child as if she was born to you, and depending on your wifes company family leave act may apply. Also if it's a condition treated by Shriners or Scottish Rite or St. Jude you can get free medical care.
