A normal afternoon in the ER

Due to normal teen idiocy - believe it or not, I'm thrilled! I got a call at work yesterday - "hi Mom, I just sliced my finger to the bone." He had made up a pitcher of kool-aid stuff, and decided he wanted a big hunk of ice in it - so he attacked a frozen water bottle with a steak knife! 3 stitches and a round of antibiotics, and, while I'm certainly not happy he hurt himself, I'm delighted it was in no way related to the nonsense we're dealing with all the time right now!!

Well-Experienced here with Teen Idiocy...

I had to laugh when I read your post. I'm glad C is OK, but I know just where you're coming from.

I remember when C was in high school, first day of sophomore year. At the end of the day, I'm at home and a police cruisier pulls into my driveway (not usually a good sign). A friend of mine is driving and C is in the back seat (even worse sign).

Well, it turns out C decided to try to jump over a bicycle rack at school, lost his balance, came down worng on his foot, and tore off his big toe nail 90% of the way. when I asked him why he tried a stunt like that, the response was the famous "Ida Know"

Gotta love teens!!

And he called YOU...that's a big plus too, no? Instead of furthering his uhm..unwise decision making and I don't know, just wrapped it up in a towel or put a bandaid on it.

Glad he's okay!!

Sounds like typical teen accident...

One of the boys I nanny for was 16 when he did this. He went to a private school, which required uniforms and they needed to be ironed...He was late one day...soooooo to save time...

He decided...

to iron the shirt.....while he was WEARING it!!!

Ohhh yeah....I got a phone call about 8 am (his parents had left for the day already), he wanted to know if it was bad that his skin on his arm had turned black..and should he go to hospital or just go to school!!

Needless to say, I took him to the hospital...

He has yet to live this down

An emergency that did not involve illegal activities...

Gee, you must be in shock!

Seriously, I'm glad he knew to get help and is okay.

Ugh, those stories make me cringe! Especially the toenail one, since the only time I've physically hurt C was to rip his toenail off! Guess I'd better explain that one! He was raging in his room and I was on the other side of the door holding it closed. He found something in there (baseball bat? broom?) and started flailing away with that - so I flung open the door to stop him - and his bare foot was right there in front of the door. That's one way to stop a rage . . . (and yes, I did report it.)

Maybe we should start a thread on stupid teen stunts? Don't know if I could stand to read it though!!

You really should be happy he called you. I walked in once in time to catch Mouse with a needle and thread about to sew up a huge deep gash in his own arm. He'd caught his arm on a nail he'd put into his door for some odd reason and just figured he could sew it up on his own.

One of my RAD foster kids slipped on the deck on the way to school in the morning and got a large piece of wood imbedded in his finger. Rather than tell me, he got on the bus and went to the nurse to ask for a bandaid. He actually required surgery to remove the wood as it passed through his tendon.
