Are you in the United States? If so, the adoption should be free, though you may have to pay some attorney's fees which you should get reimbursed for either by your state or using your 10000 tax credit.

we are in PA. ours was i think around 800 with the atty fees, physicals, clearances, but we got reimbursed. i think it could go up to 2k reimbursement but it didn't cost us near that much.
is a tax credit only useful if you itemize? just wondering because we don't make enough to itemize...like you have to have something to credit against, you know?

I recently finalized and while I had to pay the attorney fee out of pocket, I was reimbursed. That was it.

Here, we don't pay anything out of pocket for adoptions from foster care. Even with our out of state kids, we didn't pay anything, their state paid our attorney.

You don't have to itemize for the credit. But your must realise that you don't get that money in a cash lump sum. It would only knock your taxes down to zero that you have to pay in.

In our home state (OR) we paid nothing, except for travel costs during transitioning the child to our home (not applicable if you are adopting a child in you home, obviously). We have "vendor attorneys" who agree to a fixed rate to do the adoption work for state adoptions.

In our out of state adoption we had to pay some legal/court fees and such, but these could be reimbursed when the adoption was finalized.

We paid almost nothing

We paid $25 each for the background checks (total $50), and $20 each (in co-pays) for everyone in the family to get TB tests (total $100). We spent some money getting the house ready for the fire and health inspections (bought a couple of fire extinguishers and a carbon monoxide detector).

We are doing out of state adoption and the state is paying all the lawyer's fees.

We are in CO we paid $140 for the filing fees. Then I paid I believe another $30 for the new birth certificate. B/c our son kept his medicaid he is considered to have been a special needs adoption and we will be able to take advantage of the tax credit.
