Son

My 14 year old son tried it while in residential treatment. One 30mg dose and he went ballistic (uncontrollable movements, agitation, vomiting...), but they said that not only was this reaction rare - no one had ever seen it before! I was so glad he wasn't home - although we took him home for a scheduled visit that night. It took him 2-3 weeks for all the symptoms to go away.

Anyway his reaction was so uncommon I probably shouldn't have even responded to this message!

Do you mean Vyvance? My 12 yr son went on that a few months ago. He has been on adhd meds since 1st grade, mostly Concerta. We have tried a couple others, with negative results. On the Vyvance he takes less (50 mg, compared to 72 mg Concerta) and his apetite and sleep are both improved. He also says he "feels" better on it.
We just started my soon to be 12 yr old daughter on it... for her it really is the impulsivity that is the problem. So far, looks like I need to increase her dosage, because 50 mg isn't cutting it. But she usually has needed higher doses than ds, so this makes sense.

I love this med for ADHD and Bi Polar in my 9 year old. HOWEVER, be aware it takes app. 30 minutes to kick in so schedule accordingly with school etc.. And Weight is a BIG issue. I have had to put my son on nutrition shakes because the loss of appetite is huge. His weight, he lost about 10 pounds right away and then has refused to gain any at all. We are in constant contact and weekly weigh ins with peditrician at this time. Even the teachers all commented this is by far a very good med for impulse control and makes a world of difference but the weight issue may be one that gets us off it because my son is right at the growing vertical stage for the last year and has no appetite and no weight gain. We have been on meds for multiple years and again I will say that this med has worked miracles on my son, except for weight. my sons ped. tried to switch all his Adderall patients to this last year and although not documented anywhere that we or he could find he is seeing the loss of appetite / weight loss common among his patients which number in the 100's although the severity varies.

My fd is on this med. I agree with the pp appetite is definitely an issue. On the current dose she is on she still has an appetite. They have tried to increase the dose twice and she lost her appetite completely. So they brought her back down. When she first want on it they also had to give her a presciption to help her sleep at night because it was keeping her awake. Now she sleeps fine but when they tried to increase her dose it kept her awake again and the med to help her sleep did't work because the dose was too strong.

knudson and michsm, what doses are you kids on? Our son is on 50mg of vyvanse, and his appetite is better on this than it was on the Concerta (was on 72 mg concerta). Our daughter is also on 50mg of vyvanse now, but I think she needs a higher dose.

my fd is on 30mg and everytime they try to up her to 50mg her appetite is gone and she can't sleep. She also becomes very aggressive when they increase her dose, she has physically injured others when her dose was increased. Her Dr. said a kid of her size should be able to handle a higher dose, but she can't.

Update!

Well, he took the Vyvanse (sorry, that was my typo in the original post) yesterday - and it was a disaster. He was complaining that his heart hurt, that it felt like someone was punching/stabbing him in the heart; he wouldn't eat; he was vacillating between clingy and crying and screaming at everyone to leave him alone, almost in a manic state; he complained of a stomachache and a headache......the list goes on. And this is from my kid that is NOT a complainer - so I know he was telling the truth.
And even with his nighttime cocktail (melatonin/calcium/magnesium), he was wide awake last night when I went to bed at 11 p.m.
I called the specialist and his nurse at their clinic (it's 2-1/2 hours away) and no one would return my calls. Then I called our local clinic as J was clutching his heart and crying, and I was really worried.
They did another ECG (aka EKG) on him, said it was slightly elevated, but fine. The doctor said he thought J was too little for Vyvanse, and even at their smallest dose, it's too much for J.
So...........1 day on and we're done. Back to the Tenex, though like Jenny, I'm thinking of having a med-free summer.......though sure as heck not this week!!!!
Today's the last day of Art Camp and today begins his summer ADAPT (school counseling) program, twice a week, 3 hours each.
Plus we're going on a long trip this weekend - a big Juneteenth celebration - and going med-free isn't my idea of fun.
I just hope it works!

Thanks for all your advise/comments/suggestions, though, I appreciate it.

Not sure what med we'll try now!

Sandy

Vyvance is definately NOT working at all for my ODD 12 yr old daughter. The 72 mg of Concerta were really not effective anymore, so I have no idea what I am going to do with her.

50 mg is my son and behaviorally everyone agrees he is a pleasure to be around when taken. We are definetely trying a med switch this summer before school starts back. He cries at meals when asked to eat, it is so disheartening as a mom, he was a thick child before meds, while I agree necessary it has been hard to watch him drop so much so fast, his ribs and collarbones now all protrude. Meds work different with every person this is just our experience.
