G-tube??
There is a little girl that we are interested in adopting , but she has a g-tube for feeding. I have been researching about this and it seems that it isnt really as big a deal as most people make it. Her Cw says that most people are scared off when they hear that she has a g-tube . Any advice out there from people who actually deal with this? I dont think that we would have a problem with this , but I dont want to go into it without knowing either.

If you look back a few days this is discussed... under "feeding tube?" Many good points are addressed.
I would say it is not NECESSARILY a big deal depending on the reasons for the g-tube feedings and what other feeding issues/medical issues you are dealing with. The actual act of tube feeding is not complicated whatsoever. Once you read the other thread feel free to pm me if you have specific questions.

Cris73 - Here's the link to the other thread feeding tube ?.
Our daughter has not had a g-tube but it is something that has been discussed (many, many times) for her. I wish one had just been put in her when the docs first started talking about it. Now she is much older and eating (fairly well) so she probably won't need/have one. But when it was being discussed I talked to doctors, therapists, nurses and other moms, as well as researching it and I really think it is not as hard as I was preparing myself for. Some of the moms I talked to said it really wasn't that big of a deal. I hope other people with experience will post for you so you can get some more opinions/advice. Best Wishes - Suz

Our daughter has one. And it's EASY! I was a little intimidated (yes folks you read it right) by the thought of a feeding tube before she actually got it.
But now, it's a breeze. Like Ath said, I'd want to know why she has the tube. Not saying that, that would make a difference in my decision to adopt her or not. I'd just want to know. We are also adopting a son that has a feeding tube. I'll send you the link that I sent Ath. These parents deal with ALL types of feeding issues, along with medical ones too.

Hello,
Both of my boys, age 1 1/2 and 3 have G-tubes. The G-tube is no big deal, you learn how to use the equipt. and it becomes second nature. The question for you may be, why does the child have the G-tube. Their is always an underlying reason they have it. A few questions may be: Why does she have it? How long is it expected to be needed? Do the doctors know what is actually wrong, that she needs it? (My kids they still do not, we are still seeing more specialists.) Does your insurance cover this need? (We ran into this problem because the 20% became a hunge number) Am I ready to take on, what could be a life long need for her? At a minum she will have a unsural scar forever. I am in a different situation, these are my bio kids, and I love the and would not give them up for anything! We are actuallt looking into adopting a special needs child, because I have saw so many kids in the hospital with no parent around and I saw the need. We want more kids so... Anyway, I hope this helped a little. <><SheL. |
