Zyprexa

My daughter is starting this med. Has anyone else had experience with it? Anything I should look for? Any success?

This is just our experience.

My son took it for about 2 years. He gained a lot of control on it as well as about 60 pounds. He ate constantly. He loved that because he played high school football at the time. He found it hard to get off of because his behaviors would flare up and he asked to continue to take it. When he got off of it, he chose to be weaned off instead of stopping. After 3 or 4 tries he was able to successfully delete it from his meds. He lost the 60 pounds in about 2 months or less. It was such a rapid weight loss that his coaches asked me if he'd been checked for leukemia! I know that there are some concerns about increased risk for diabetes, but at the time even my son was willing to take the chance in order to help control his bipolar disorder.

At the time he was on an incredible amount of stuff--zyprexa, depakote, remeron, lexapro and metadate CD. Can we say out of control? Over the course of 2 years he was gradually reduced until we're now down to Strattera and concerta, depakote and lexapro. It's working.

<<He ate constantly>>

Yes, this is a big worry with this medication. It causes huge weight gains/appetites and can cause diabetes because of that. Probably not a first choice but works well for Bipolar manias.
