another question?
I have yet another question for all of you who are more experienced than me.
I have another appointment with my fd psychiatrist in the morning. Any advice on how to get my point across to them and have them listen to me? I posted last week about her med change. Her ADHD med is keeping her awake at night, totally taking her appetite away(I have even tried to get her to eat big breakfast and still not hungry), and causing aggression. Her other new med seemed to cause her to have very odd behavior, for her,(organizing for hour and hours on end, talking even more than usual. When I called her Dr. she had me stop the new meds until this next appt. I spoke with her Psychologist and he basically told me(which confused the heck out of me) that her bad behavior off the meds was because she wasn't on any and her weird behavior on the meds could have just been coincidental. Also, that she would be put back on meds and basically to deal. I am open to them trying what they want at this point, although I find her much easier to manage when she is not on anything and I don't agree with reasoning. Ex. taking medicine to deal with anger, I think she should be able to express it not surpress it with meds. I told him I was even open to trying the lower dose of ADHD meds again. The only thing I have a problem with is the increased dosage of the ADHD meds that they have tried to put her on twice now. She needs to sleep, she needs to eat and she doesn't need anything that is going to make her physically aggressive twords anyone. How do I get this across to them. I respect the fact that they are the Dr.'s but I am the one that has to deal with her everyday. She has RAD, ADHD and PTSD if that helps.

I have no experience with this, but it seems like you should try to switch doctors. This one does not appear to be listening to what you are trying to say about your FD's symptoms when she is on the medications.

Document everything. Keep and hourly log of behaviors. That was the only way I could get anything done.

I was a school nurse and weight loss was a really big issue with kids on many ADHD meds. I'd document everything and do a daily or every-other-day weight check. Also keep a log of everything you can get her to eat so they know you are trying to get her more food. keep a sleep log too. These meds do have side effects and if the effects outweigh the benefits of the meds then children shouldn't take them. some meds work great for some kids and not others. If you think, as mom, that these meds are not working on not doing what they are "supposed" to do and your doctor won't listen then i'd shop for a new doctor. But with all medicial professionals "if you didn't document it you didn't do it" so having a written log is one way to get your point across in a way that medical professionals might "get".
