Update

A few months ago I ventured over here and sked for assistance on my son Elijah. His visual impairment affects his reading fluency and I was having a difficult time getting the IEP team to address the issue.
WELL.... He was assessed at a Low Vision Clinic yesturday and they encourage his vision teacher to start teaching him Braille. (Which I requested months ago!)
He reads 48 words per min. which is OK now in 3rd grade- still slow, but acceptable. However, as he gets older this will make school more difficult.
His next IEP meeting for next year is in two weeks and Braille will be on it!!!! YAY!!
At the meeting I will try to hold in my thoughts of saying, "I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!" I guess a professionals words are stronger than mine! Sad, but true!
Thanks again to all that gave me advice back then. I just thought I'd share my good news. It took some time, but I got what I wanted!

I'm glad your son is going to get what he needs. It always amazes me that parents get treated like we know nothing about our own kids. It would be so much easier if people would just pay attention to us. So glad you got the proffessional backing to get help for your child.

I SO AGREE!!
Funny how we usually have to "kick and scream" to even be heard and then get treated like an annoyance too.
I think the schools (sometimes) like it when we just sit back and let them do what they want.
From my understanding Braille is a huge expense on the district due to the amount of time the VI teacher spends with the child. I guess that's why the don't "like" to do it. BUT, when it's in the best interest of a child...why question it!

Way to go!! I'm also glad your son will be getting what he needs to succeed.

I remember attending a pre-adoption class where they told us that 'you are the experts on your children'. Yeah, well, I wish they'd passed that info on to all the professionals we've dealt with over the years!

I expected that there would be times like this - but I never thought they'd be so bad, so long, and so frequent.
