Question about HIV and insurance

Hello all,

We are wondering about adoption of HIV+ children and how does this play....

If we were to do it, we would adopt a, older child (6+ years) so no more chance of becoming negative.

I understand the child wont have subside because it is an international adoption.

We have a WONDERFUL insurance but questions too...

Like:

Can the insurance refuse to accept my newly adopted child because the child has HIV?

Is there any program in USA to help with medicines for HIV kids (I read somewhere that insurance wont cover medicines)?

Does anyone know anything about it?

Thanks

Your insurance will cover your child from the date of placement. They can't "disqualify" your child because of a pre-existing condition.

This applies only if your insurance is a GROUP insurance, like through an employer. They are the only ones legally mandated to accept anyone regardless of preexisting conditions. If you have one of these, you are likely to fine, and the child will be accepted the same as a newborn bio-child.

If your insurance is an individual policy, they can make whatever rules they please, including excluding new children for any reason including preexisting conditions or even simply the fact they weren't named on the individual policy on the date you purchased it.

Also if you do have group coverage and they cover your child. You can't switch to another insurance for six months. If you decide to leave your job and try to get individual insurance, like if you wanted to start your own business, they will probably deny you.
