Goodbye Valium..Hello Klonopin

A had an Neuro appointment today, so that we could get the EEG and MRI results.

The MRI didn't show us anything that we didn't already know.
The EEG showed that she had lots and lots of spikes..meaning seizure activity. Which is normal in kids with infantile spasms. Matter a fact they had to stop the test because she was having them so bad.

Anyways the Neuro said that she has an temperamental brain. I looked at her and said"NO joke". This baby can have a temper at times.

She took her off the diazepam (valium) since she has become immune to it. And put her on klonopin, not only to help with her spasms, but also with her sleep issues.

Hmm reckon a good nights sleep is in my future?? I sure hope so!

We have to do a half tablet .5 mg at twice a day for two weeks. If that doesn't help I bump it up to half a tablet in the morning, half at lunch and a whole tablet at bedtime.

I normally wouldn't want to medicate a child, but her problems have gone beyond rediculous. And she has a for real sleep disorder. The neuro said that she has so much brain activity, that it won't shut down, so she can sleep. And if she does fall asleep, it kicks back up..waking her up...and momma too. And sometimes the whole house! Then when she's awake she has clusters of spasms which even further keeps her awake.

Hmm thinking back.. I know why her foster mom had her crib in the dinning room. She didn't want to be disturbed at night.

Anyone know about klonpin??

Afraid I'm no help about the new med. Just wanted to wish you well and add my hopes that it helps your baby girl.

Klonopin is a benzodiazepine, in the same class of drugs as Valium (Klonopin = Clonazepam; Valium = Diazepam). It has anti seizure effects and sedative effects and is used a lot in kids.
Good luck. I hope it works for your little one and everyone can get some sleep.

My son has a seizure disorder and uses klonopin after he has a seizure. it is in the same class as valium, it relaxes them and keeps the seizure activity at bay.

They also use this med for panic disorders and I am sure many other things. when my son does have a seizure and we give him one it really knocks him out he says that it makes him feel really relaxed and that it makes him sleep well...lol...give me some...

I'm happy your getting answers and hope the new meds will allow your whole house some much needed sleep. Is this something little A will outgrow?

Yeah Some answers and hopefully help for you. That is good. Teeter DID "outgrow" his seizures, but they also never found any underlying cause why he was seizing to begin with. A's case certainly sounds more complex. I hope a good few hours of sleep is in your future, it gets so stressful when you're tired all the time.

I know what it is like to not sleep, I have suffered from insomnia since my teens. Now that I am sleeping regularly it is my favorite thing to do and I have mini anxiety attacks if I have a bad night fearing it will turn into a pattern. I hope your poor baby gets the sleep she needs and the whole house for that matter.

The med worked great..up until around 1:30 am. Which is normally the time that she gets up for the night. But normally she wakes every 20 minutes until then. So some progress.

Maybe once she goes completely off the valium and solely on the klonopin things will even get better.

So for the first night, I'd definately say it's progress!
