Update from school

Yesterday I got a chance to talk with J's intervention specialist and OT while cruising the halls after on route to the halloween party. J is having a fabulous year, is working hard and they are both very pleased with his progress.

They said they are having NO behavior problems this year (knocking on wood) and that he really is a joy to work with. What a difference from last year. WOW!

Thanks. I think the IEP we have made all the difference. Like tonight when he had some work he did in class that he needed to correct as well as his usual homework. The corrections alone took an hour. Plus he needed to read and do his spelling list so his regular math homework didn't get done. With the IEP, as long as I inform the teacher why he isn't turning that in and that we'll do it over the weekend, he's still okay. The lack of pressure from both home and school seems to really be helping. It's so nice to have him LIKE school again! YEAH!

Wow...way to go!!!

It's a bummer you need an IEP for something like the homework situation though. I've written on incomplete homework at times with an explanation and it's always been fine. Teachers usually just say "hey..life happens sometimes so if something doesn't get done, just let me know".

Good that you have the IEP if that's the way it's done in your school though!

If it were every now and then, we wouldn't need an IEP for the homework situation. But because of J's LD issues, it can be very very frequent depending on the assignment and how he is processing at the moment. Plus, J doesn't feel pressure that he needs to get everything done each night. Sometimes he's doing great and homework can take only 30 minutes. Other times it's over an hour of hard work before we finish even one worksheet.
