I'm thinking WAY outside the box on this one, if these ideas are too impossible I'll certainly understand.
How about a traveling tutor? One who will go in the van with your son during the trips to and from the various doctors? There's that hour or so during the appointments you'd probably have to pay for while the tutor didn't tutor, but maybe worth considering if you can find one. It would give a couple extra hands in the van, too, to pick up dropped items, in addition to using those few traveling hours you have in a useful way. What about summer tutoring? Or holiday tutoring? He could catch up on a lot during non-appointment and non-school days with 6 hours of one-on-one tutoring. Would he benefit from peer tutoring? Is there someone who could work with him during classroom "down" times? That child might have access to those fun games you can't duplicate at home, like the bingo one. And it's not as easy to con a child as it is an adult. But I do agree with everyone else on attachment being most important. If you can't find a way to do both attachment and education, then you know which one can be caught up with later. Hang in there! |

The tutor would be awesome, but for a one hour appointment we are gone at least five hours. Often when we have the clinic appointments those last several hours, plus the four hours of travel time that I would have to pay them for. Other than that little money thing, it would be great, because I have a messed up bladder and he hates when we stop and I have to take him into the ladies room with me, LOL. He rarely has to go since he doesn't like to eat or drink so he just has to go with me and I usually just carry him since it's faster than getting the wheelchair out. However, I don't know anyone who would do that. I may look around and see if a retired person would be interested. The peer tutoring I don't think would work. He doesn't get along too well with kids his age. He bosses them and won't listen to them and sometimes hits. He is a total charmer with adults, but he has never learned to get along with kids, they were always the competition in the orphanage.
