Early Intervention

EI came out for our intake interview for M today. We're concerned about his speech and possible SI issues.

The CW came out during lunch and asked me a lot of questions about how and what he eats. He qualified on food issues alone. She recommended a dietitian, but honestly, I know what to feed him. It's more that the experience of squishing the banana is more stimulating than actually eating it.

Anyway, M's having a cognitive, developmental and sensory assessment this month as well as hearing and speech tests. All in all it looks to be a very busy month for us, but the outcome will hopefully bring M some help that will get him talking.

But, on a really cool note, I found out that the Attachment and Bonding Center of Ohio (Dr. Greg Keck) is one of their service providers. Turns out that our county's EI program recognizes attachment disorder as a developmental issue. This doesn't affect M in anyway, but I'm certainly going to be keeping it in mind when I meet people with recently adopted little ones.

Jenny, I'm glad that you'll be getting the EI. It was a huge help to us.. Also great about Dr Keck. Maybe it will be easier for kids to get the help they need.

I'm glad you are receiving these services. I hope its the key to some of his issues.

I am also really excited that Dr Keck is one of their providers. How great that the school finally recognizes the importance of attachment. I hope the word gets out and people utilize this.

Good luck to M.

Well, all of M's testing is done.

He can hear fine, which is awesome. He also appears to be on track cognitavely and with his gross and fine motor, although I haven't recieved the full repot on that yet.

The biggest concern is his speech, which is what we suspected. He tested at the 15-18 range for receptive language but in the 9-12 range in expressive. He also is considered at-risk for articulation issues because he just isn't vocalizing much. We're now on a wait list for speech therapy and a toddler language program. Hopefully, we'll be able to get him started sometime after the first of the year.

This whole process was very enlightening for me. I know a lot about the testing process for preschool on, but this is my first experience with birth to three services. Overall, I am very pleased and looking forward to getting my little guy the help he needs now.

Jenny~
That is great news. To give you hope...I'll share DS's story.

My little guy has speech and artic. issues (among others) and in September he started his special needs preschool/pre-K program which is language based. He is working very hard (school is 6 hours per day, 5 days per week) but the progress he has already made is remarkable. We are shocked and amazed on a daily basis at how he has improved...but the biggest difference is he is so much happier and pleasant.

Good luck with it...
