I'm asking because we know someone who trains service animals (as well as companion animals). He recently rescued a 9-12 month old female american pit bull terrier who he has evaluated and believes would be a great service animal for an Autistic or developmentally disabled child. Now, I know lots of people have negative feelings toward the breed, but I know many APBT's and I believe they are wonderful dogs with very stable temperaments (they have a bad reputation due to bad press, usually, or mistreatment). Anyway, I have met this dog. She is sweet, well mannered, and incredibly good with (and LOVES) children. I just thought I would toss it out there -- if your family is interested in more information, they can contact Dennis Owens at animaltrainer@hotmail.com. Since he trains service animals, if they are not interested in this particular dog, he would probably be able to help them acquire a dog and train it to provide the services your nephew requires assistance with. Mr. Owens is also very well-versed in service animal law and issues, since he has a service dog himself, if they need more information. I thought I'd pass along the information in case it could be of any help to your family.
