Mike, even our b/son has NO idea of the concept of money. Just the other day he asked for $2,300 to go to Germany with his class...um, no!!!! Honestly, we could come up with the money, but it's the idea that he just wants it handed over while he spends *his* money on other things. I thought I had done a better job of teaching him the concept of money, but it's obvious through his actions when it comes to money, that he is clueless!
Lucy, we don't give money for chores done. We tried that and the kids still wanted money without doing the chores, so we don't do that anymore. I just had the medication doctor tell me that we should pay our 12 year old to hand in his assignments at school..???!!!! That is her solution to get him to turn in assignments since he keeps forgetting to. I looked at her like she was crazy! I'm sorry, but what on earth would that teach him? Am curious, what did you end up doing? ![]()

SAHmom-this is research. You expect action already?!
I keep running all these ideas through my head and thinking how MY kids would react to them. Thinking I may need more then one plan.

We did make our then 10-11 year old earn half of the money when he wanted to go on a trip. He was selected to be a Student Ambassador, and he went to England, Scottland, Ireland and Wales. I did not sleep while he was gone! LOL, He did have to earn half of the money. It was hard, but he came up with ways. He made tied fleece blankets, and he made beaded Christmas ornaments. He was able to sell those and make enough money (grandma and aunt way overpaid for what they bought from him though!) It made him appreciate it more. Now he wants to go to Australia, but he says not yet, because he doesn't want to work right now, because he is afraid his grades would drop. (you don't get to travel if your grades are not up to par in this house, you loose all kinds of things if the grades are not acceptable- and each kid has a different level of acceptable) So I think he understands the concept. This is the same kid who just paid for the bass though, he was able to save up for that in about six months or so. (thanks to some money at christmas from relatives)

We're supposed to teach about money, too? And give an allowance? Let's just say that my kids are all on the fast track to being rude, crude, and uneducated. In short, the kind of person who would fart in church. Loudly. On purpose. And then laugh. Probably during communion or something.
So, right now I'm trying to find some sort of something (percaset? margarita?) that will just get me from getting up in the a.m. til I get to go to bed at night. I'm trying to get the kids to TALK NICELY, look at me when I'm talking (HA!) and not hit each other just on general principles. I'm going insane. And now I'm supposed to teach them something about money, too?? How about, 'How to get into credit card debt in one easy lesson?' I'm even snickering evilly when I wrote that. I feel like crying. Or swearing. Can I run away? Pleeeeeeeeeeezzzze??? (Day isn't going so well. Can you tell?)

Barki, just get out the beer and teach them to gamble. It'll all be fine!
Hope your day improves.

Barki...are you sure you just wanna do the "phone thing"?? Come visit!!!!
I do warn you though that I have farters as well. ![]() Money...I teach my kids the basics. "This is 10 bucks. But you really only have 7 bucks, due to taxes and the taxes get worse the more money you have. So you don't really want money and should let mom keep it for you. )

I'm up for getting my foster care license renewed... I have to have six hours of classes and two can be on line hours - I went to fosterparents.com last night to take my last two hours before the licensing worker comes out tomorrow... I was reading through the choices of classes to take and saw one about teaching money skills - so I signed up for it, took the on-line course and passed!!!
Anyway, this thread influenced my decision of what course to pick... just thought I'd share and let you all know that there is such a course on fosterparents.com if anyone is interested.

Kerby, I love that site! I have gone there for many years. It also has a behavior chart that I changed a little and use with my kids.
