Post If you adopted from foster care......

I am doing research for a book I am writing for adoption.com. I am having difficulty finding some information.

If you adopted from foster care, could you answer a few questions for me.

What state are you in?
How long after placement before you can finalize?
What pre-adoption classes did you have to take? MAPP, PACE, PRIDE, CORE, or something else?
Are you considered a foster parent until finalization?

Anything else about state regulations that you think a new adoptive family would need to know.

You can e-mail me off line at kelly@radzebra.org if you would like.

Thanks!!

What state are you in?...Tennessee
How long after placement before you can finalize?..27 months for L, she was our foster child.
What pre-adoption classes did you have to take? MAPP, PACE, PRIDE, CORE, or something else?.. PATH (Parents As Tender Healers)..30 hours training, with 15 hours annually.
Are you considered a foster parent until finalization?..Yes. Then after finalization No (for that child/children). And Yes if you choose to keep your home open.

Our Foster, Adoption, Foster to Adopt, are all the same class.
No extra adoption classes required. You just check the box on the application, for your preference.

How long after placement before you can finalize? Sorry, can't provide any help, haven't been placed yet
What pre-adoption classes did you have to take? MAPP, PACE, PRIDE, CORE, or something else? They just called it 24 hours of Precertification Classes (there was no neat acronym).
Are you considered a foster parent until finalization? Yes

Oh and it's 6 months here for adoption placements to finalization. I read it wrong. And if placed with you for adoption..it's considered pre-adoption placement.

If your adopting your foster child. You remain the foster parent, until adoption is final.

I guess I was having a DUH moment.

state: ma

6 months after child has been living with you.

you are considered pre-adoptive parents, but have the same 'legal' standing as a foster parent. meaning, everything must get approved, like leaving the state, etc.

here it is called MAPP classes.

What state are you in?
MO

How long after placement before you can finalize?
6month minimum

What pre-adoption classes did you have to take? MAPP, PACE, PRIDE, CORE, or something else?
I took MAPP but MO actually uses STARS and Spaulding

Are you considered a foster parent until finalization?
NO-mo uses 2 hearings. The first is a temporary custody hearing done before the child can move in. Then there is a final adoption hearing at the end.
I believe if you are a foster parent, you do not have to do the TC hearing at the beginning.

What state are you in? In Minnesota but adopted from Texas

How long after placement before you can finalize? Texas says 6 months - in Minnesota it is 3 months

What pre-adoption classes did you have to take? MAPP, PACE, PRIDE, CORE, or something else? In Minnesota it is a two day adoption training - no cool name

Are you considered a foster parent until finalization? With Texas no - once I signed the placement paperwork I was the parent. In Minnesota yes - foster parent until finalization.

Anything else about state regulations that you think a new adoptive family would need to know.

It can take a long time to get thru the red tape especially if there is an ICPC - interstate compact for out of state kids involved. But worth the wait so don't give up no matter how frustrating.

What state are you in?
PA, but our son came from Oregon.
How long after placement before you can finalize?
6 months, but that was when it was filed, we finalized after 10 months. ICPC took us 8 months.
What pre-adoption classes did you have to take? MAPP, PACE, PRIDE, CORE, or something else?
We took adoption classes through our agency, no name for it. I think it was 7 weeks.
Are you considered a foster parent until finalization?
Yes, but our SW allowed us to have signing rights and we were allowed to do things with our son that we could not do with regular foster kids.

What state are you in?

Ohio

How long after placement before you can finalize?

6 months, minimum. This can be adjusted as the situation warrents

What pre-adoption classes did you have to take? MAPP, PACE, PRIDE, CORE, or something else?

No 'official' name... just a required 36 hours of initial training then 10 hours additionally per year to keep your liscense active

Are you considered a foster parent until finalization?

Yes and no. It's called an adoptive placement, however, services still run through the county, there are monthly visits form the worker and you re required to seek the same approvals a straight foster placement is.

Anything else about state regulations that you think a new adoptive family would need to know.

Ohio's system is county run, but overseen by a state governing body. While teh state sets down mandates, it's up to the counties to enforce and interpret them. The way things are done in one county may vary in the next.

What state are you in?
AZ

How long after placement before you can finalize?
I believe it's 9 months minimum, or 6 months if the child has been in the home for a year (as foster placement, I guess), but ours has taken 21 months.

What pre-adoption classes did you have to take? MAPP, PACE, PRIDE, CORE, or something else?
We originally went through PRIDE, but the state just switched to MAPP, so we had to do a mini version of that, too.

Are you considered a foster parent until finalization?
We were. I'm not sure if you have to be...
