Do you think illness is intensified?

Angel will be 4 in 2 weeks - she has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Today her temp n both ears went up to 106.4

I know all kids get sick ~ IS it just me, but I am seeing a slight diffrence in her reactions...........she HATES water (compress)..........and medications (they go down her funny -histpry of lyrnx problems)

She goes from top speed of hating all of this (she is very strong although she is little) to complete down.............no in between - I'm not describing this very well.

Has anyone noticed that your kids react differently to the "standard" medications and treatments when they are sick?

Yes Yes Yes

I don't know if it has to do with his fas or his adhd or any of his other issues but i will tell you we go from fine to very sick in 0-60 and fight over all medications. When we do get him to take his meds. Watch out cause the normal usual reaction is not what we have, we have the exact opposite. I have discussed this with the ped. she stated it was because of all of his issues that he has such reactions. He also can tolerate a lot of things "normal" kids can not.

WOW Jody that is Angel!

She is more hyper then normal with Benadryl (allergies) and I"ve watched her be almost the exact opposite with many medications.

I really have a problem with this pediatrician (he is the partner of ehr rgular ped - who ironically is ill today)

Do you have any suggestions on talking to her regular ped about this? The partner is REALLY intolerant of her and refuses to even acknowledge her conditions ~ but becasue she is sitll on medicaid, I don't have a lot of chocies ~ kwim?

Same reaction from a temp Ped

My regular Ped. was on Maternity leave and I had a huge clash with her replacement. He basically told me that my 1 yr old dd's eating problems were not as a result of the reflux and that they were just behavioural. He actually wanted to prescribe a sedative to help her sleep. I had to absolutely insist on him refilling her reflux meds and told him we wouldn't be back for regular weighins until our doctor was back. Then I explained to our doctor exactly what he had said and how he had made me as a parent feel and that he had no idea about drug/alcohol exposed kids. So sorry no advise if you don't have options with drs. But keep advocating for your little girl, your the Mom and you see how the different meds make her react. Also using the internet to research might be helpful too... Good luck.

finding a ped.

Well to tell you the truth the way i found a ped. was i called around, my son is on medicaid too. I called and stated he was born very addicted and he had fas and a lot of other things. I asked what the peds experience was with it. If they hadn't dealt a lot with it I moved on to the next one on the medicaid list. Finally I found our current ped who sees lots of the foster children in the area and she is so easy to deal with. She is open six days a week and had no problem answering questions over the phone. She suggested medication for the hyperactivity at two however we told her we would like to wait until closer to five for medication so she suggested a food diet and behaviorist to see if it would help. Hope that helps some.

Benadryl is something we keep in stock cause ds has lots of allergies, however we have to be prepared for the reaction to it. Makes him "bonkers". LOL

It's called paradoxal reaction. My son has it. Anything that says 'may cause drowsiness' on the bottle send him bouncing off the ways.

His teacher would prefer I send him to school coughing with a snotty nose, than to give him cough medicine. It just jacks him up. Being sick makes him mean - no one needs a meany on speed.

Have you tried Claratin for allergies? He doesn't have any side effects from that. It works fine his for nasal allergies. But not his insect allergies - on Benedryl for that. I try to use Caladryl instead. Absorbs slower.

My son isn't FAE/FAS that I'm aware of. However he is an SI kid. His sensory is so oversensative to any meds that it really messes with him.

He also has a very HIGH tolerance for pain. He had adnoid surgery and I gave him 1 dose of pain meds. And it wasn't that he was in pain, but it was Tylnol and he needed to have the swelling come down.
