Exclamation Dude Looks Like a Lady...

Well, just when I was comfortable with C doing the whole "Goth" thing, he takes another turn on me. Anyone here familiar with the "emo" look?

Emo apparently is a fshion trend that I would call "androgynous". Guys wear tight pants and tight shirts, oftentimes those designed for women. (If you watch "Drake and Josh" on Nick, Drake would be considered Emo.) You can see where this is going...

Yesterday, C came home from his girlfriend's with a pair of jeans. Thinking nothing of it, he went to try them on. When he came out, I was a bit surprised. These jeans were TIGHT and low-rise. (C is 6'3" and 200 lbs. The jeans are a size 4!) When he asked me what I thought, I said "That I'm never going to be a grandfather."

This morning, he wore them to school along with a tight shirt with the top few buttons undone (apparently to show off his shaved chest)

I'm starting to think that his grilfriend is thinking of him as a life-sized "dress up" doll. Lordy!!

Mike

The tight clothes ...

Our 14 year old has also been going smaller ... and the trend for teenage boys is to buy the "girls" jeans - they are tighter in the legs than the boys/mens version yet have the extra room in the hip area they 'require' .... and yes they do look too tight ... and the shirts that were once loose and hanging are now small or medium size and show all ... can't imagine C in a 4 as mine is 5'9" and weighs near 165 ... and 10's are unreal!!!

Interesting to hear if others are going through this too ...

EMO look was popular here a few years back. The kids all died their hair black as well. I just try to pay no attention to the nutty fashions of my boys. My 22 year old is now kicking himself for stretching his earlobes out so far. They closed most of the way but left big nasty looking scars.

just goes to show - there's nothing so silly looking that it can't become fashionable. I definitely agree, you should take pictures to use as blackmail in about 15 years.

Thankfully, the EMO look is waning quickly here. I second Mckenna's idea of ensuring a picture commemorates the phase!!!

Emo

AAARRRGGG!!!!

Yes, I know all about the emo look... Poor E just wants to be a skater kid these days, but his girlfriend (who's been driving me nuts lately) tries to play "dress up doll" with poor E. We went clothes shopping and he wanted her to come with. She kept getting grouchy because E didn't want shirts that were 5 sizes too small that showed his naval... and pants that would hang way too low on his hips. He wants the baggy clothes that are way too big... which is fine with me. I told him that I wouldn't buy those small clothes and I think it looks ridiculous... I must admit that I'm quite happy that E doesn't want to dress that way - he really doesn't like the whole "emo" thing that well... but his girlfriend sure does.

We are emo here. My son has the haircut also, short and spiked in back and long in front. He wears size 0 "girl-pants". We actually went to the mall to buy some. He borrowed his first pair from his girlfriend. He got 2 pair for Christmas. He sews as well so he can "peg" his pants and shirts. He actually took in a tee shirt so it would be tighter. He also wanted to wear eyeliner. It was a little depressing at first for me but I remember the L and L advice about letting go of everything you can, and focussing on what is important. Here is a photo that I plan on using to tease him when he is grown up.

Yep, that's my C as well! I've been telling him for at least a year that he'll never give me grandchildren! The hair was long (and curly, to his distress), and a girlfriend bleached it for him (to my distress), then another girl helpfully gave him a handmade Mohawk! He hated it and asked me to shave it completely, which I did. Girls do use him as their dress-up doll, which drives me nuts - the new therapist tells me it's about boundaries, and we'll at some point be working on that. He sews as well, and pegs his pants and puts seams in already too small tshirts. C claims to be a skater dude rather than EMO, but I can't get him into anything baggy. Pretty funny, when you consider I was so worried about his choosing gang-banger baggy clothing . . . Isn't there a happy medium???

This reminds me of the boys in the 80's that wore eyeliner and tight clothes. I can't believe I dated some of those guys BRIEFLY. They all wanted to borrow my things (make up and clothes). I couldn't do it. It's funny b/c one of them is a police officer now. What a difference a few years can make.

All this talk of EMO...I had to look it up. It's just punk again. In high school and college my sister and her friends were into the punk scene and dressed that way. She still has all of her old Doc Martens. Don't worry it won't last too long. She's grown up now and a special ed teacher. I think the part that made my mom the craziest was tatoos and my sisters obsession with thrift clothes and hooded sweatshirts aka the hoodies.

Mike, why not shock C and be EMO for the day, LOL. I think he'd probably realize how freaky it really is. Oh and if you do, please post PHOTOS!

Thumbs down Me, EMO?????

OK, Gang:

As I said in chat last week, am 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. Believe me, I have NO problem finding tight clothes!! And I will NOT wear women's clothes, sorry!

I'm thinking that a couple of days of super-tight pants and C might realize that he needs some "free space". Once his voice goes up an octave, we'll know.

Speaking of fashion, I was walking into our building today wearing my normal "office wear, non-meeting day": black pants, black turtleneck, black leather jacket. I ran into a friend of mine who said "You know, Mike, you should really add some color to your wardrobe. The way you dress, you like like you're with the Gestapo." Jeez, can't I EVER catch a break????

Mike

Ok, I just had a picture of a summer get-together with all of us, plus kids. And on the second day, when everyone kind of knows each other, and the kids are feeling comfortable and adjusted, have all the parents appear in "kid" clothing (goth, or EMO, or skater dude - our choice!) - in public!!!

Their reaction and embarrassment would almost be worth our embarrassment!
