Cool No TV is hard!

Man...I hope these guys get their grades up this first 9 weeks! I am not sure I can make it without CNN!

Well, we made it through the first week of school. It is full moon time and we are there!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

ROFL We dont have cable, but usually get two stations with our antenna. That stopped around 3 weeks ago. We are spending so much money on video rentals right now that I think we are considering basic cable (which is a huge moral step for us ).

Good luck. You can survive. Plus, you will end up like me checking into the CNN website numerous times a day FOR FREE!

There is life without tv. You will survive. Glad school went so well. Mine went 2 days and I'm already in trouble with the school. Nurse called me about this terrible rash my son has on his arms. While it does look terrible, its excema and agrevated by playing outside. She wanted me to drop everything and rush right there and take him to the doctors. Told her he gets it all the time and we use Benedryl when he needs it. She wanted a doctors note. Told her I was busy with another child who is in the hospital and I'd deal with it Monday. She sent home a note refusing to allow him to attend school. I considered withdrawing him but he likes school. So, dropped the stuff for the child in the hospital and took this one to the doctor who agreed the nurse was indeed and idiot and told me to keep using the Benedryl.
So, lovely start to school here as usual.
(see Jen, be glad you homeschool as you don't have to play stupid games)

I'm watching to see if you survive, Indy. If you can do it, we just might.... I've done without TV or VCR, but Dh is having serious heart palpitations at the thought of going without video enhancement to his life. And I'm also wondering if I'd miss my couple of PBS series that I watch. Hmmm. Maybe we could do an ONLY PBS household? LOL

We actually just cancelled cable because we found that we stopped watching it. We more likely to watch videos or have a mocie night than watch TV these days. We bought an attenna so DH can still get his football. It's actually pretty nice. You'll make it Indy. By the time they get their grades up, you won't even realize you were missing it.

Lucy - If I didn't know you were in another state I'd wonder if our kids were at the same school. I've had my son's opthamologist send papers several times about his amblyoplia. Yet, everytime the nurse does a vison screening, she's all shocked that he has no depth perception. She does the same for my friends 5th grader who is profoundly deaf in one ear and the nurse was the one who detected it in the kindergarten screening. Go figure.

Indy - why do YOU have to miss out on t.v.? A punishment for the kids does not necessarily have to be one for you too. Get yourself a little portable t.v. and keep it in your car when not at home. Or sneak over to the neighbor's when they have theirs on and watch from the window. LOL!

Uh Crick, Indy said he wanted to watch the news, not be on the news for peeking in windows.

My dh wasn't real happy the day he came home and discovered I'd tossed out the tv.(thought he was going to toss me out with it) He did like the difference it made in the kids though.

And Jen, I'd claim to be the smart one in the state, but then how could I explain how I ended up in this mess in the first place!?!

Jenny-the school calls me every year to tell me my sons colorblind. I think this year I'll practice a dramatic response as if I've never heard this before.

Who needs tv with a life this much fun?(must confess, the tvs have returned in the last year.....)

Well it's not like he'd be a peeping tom! He'd have his lawn chair, blanket, and popcorn too! I know it's just CNN and not a movie, but it would still be a treat for him to watch so that calls for popcorn, right?

school nurses

I can tell you an even better one on a school nurse. Several years ago we had a teen age girl in 8 th grade. Received a call from the nurse that we had to take this girl to the doctor right away. She was complaining of her arm hurting and her fingers were turning blue. She says I am watching them turn bluer all the time. I called the doctor of the emergency and my husband picked her up and took her right straight to the doctor. His nurse took one look and her hands, went and got an alcohol swab and wiped the blue off her hands. She had on new pants and the color was coming off on her hands. Last year she sent another home from school telling me she has foot and mouth disease. It looked like poison ivy to me, but then I am only a mother. The doctor was not in, the next day she was better, so I sent her back to school. They made me come and pick her up that she was not allowed to be in school for 3 days. It was poison ivy. I also survived the first week. Received call from the teacher that the third grader was not turning in his homework and she had already made him move his desk. po

Hehe, wimp . LOL, Nine Weeks! Ha, that's nothing . I've gone for months and months and months. (but when I was laid off I've snuck off to watch Passions here and there)

The website is way better. Try the National Public Radio website, too. Then you dont have to watch all that crud to get the one good story! Also try yahoo news. I hate MSN's set-up.

Indy,

Our kids don't watch TV, but they are allowed to watch kid DVD's we've got them when we go on dates and they've got a babysitter. We stopped cable when we remodeled the house, and never got it started up again. The DH rents movies and watches them after the kids are asleep. I spend all my free time online, as you can see, LOL! Oh, DH will watch sports on TV on the weekend and the kids can watch, but they are not that interested in tennis or golf thus far.

When we first got our kids, they were used to an environment where the TV was literally never off. It did not really distract them, but the silence creeped them out--they're used to it now. Now, with 9 months of no TV, if we are at a doctor's appointment or something and they have a TV, they become totally engrossed because it's a novelty. I find it depressing to see them looking at the screen like drugged people.

I love that my kids have learned how to play since they've been in our home, and that would not have happened had they had access to TV, at least not to the degree they have. Of course, my 3 are younger than your guys. We'll see how they feel about this when they're 15!

Smile Two weeks down!

And only 7 more until they get their report cards. I think I can make it....I think I can make it!

It is amazing! They actually are showing me homework! And working on it without being told too!
