What happens when I move to another state?
My question deals with moving from one state to another after an adoption takes place. Will I be eligible for benefits in the new state or will the old benefits follow me into the new state? (such as medical and adoption subsidary)....? I need to move to another state as the original state has NOTHING to help with the high level of care of these children that I have adopted. I have 4 siblings ...all high maintanance....and the state of Michigan has NOTHING to offer me....I would like to move to Wisconsin where they have much more in the way of services, but am afraid that I will have the Michigan Medical card which is useless. Does anyone know how this works? Can anyone answer this for me? Thanks!!!!

To top it off, social workers and administrators are often not aware of these issues, and the adoptive family and child can end up effectively disenfranchized by a move that everyone thought would be in the child's best interest. These things are about to get cleared up, thanks to the prohibition on geographic restrictions in Clinton's Adoption and Safe Family Act. However, it's going to take a year or two or more to get the states to a place where Adoption Assistance can be the "national passport" that it has to be. Good Luck, and do all your research well!
