Question Hydrocephaly at birth....no shunt

We are waiting to meet our soon to be child (3 y.o.). He suffered from hydrocephaly at birth....positive for syphilis at birth and drug exposure. He has developmental delays. It seems the cranial fluid was absorbed early on in his infancy, and our little guy did not require a shunt. His head size is larger than normal, though all tests indicate there is no more cranial fluid to be concerned about....i have done alot of research on hydrocephaly, yet can find no information about "resolved" hydrocephaly where no shunt is indicated. Can anyone help?

I hvae a daughter who also had resolved hydrocephalus. She happens to have cerbral palsy. BUT___ I have a good friend , 28 yrars old now. She had hydrcephalus that resolved without shunting. She has no specail problems. She is intelligent and made it through school with no problems. She is now a correctional officer.

Thank you for your response and for the hopefulness it leaves me with...I know that our little guy has significant delays....he will be 4 in Nov. though has a readiness level of a 24 month old with low cognitive abilities. My glass is always 'half-full'...I feel the quicker he gets into a permanant family, with lots of love, nurturing and of coarse special services, he could do very well. He is an absolute gorgeous child and in all of his photographs, he is smiling so big. I am already in love!! Just wish I could find more info. on resolved hydrocephaly and maybe even some statistics.

Our oldest has hydrocephalus, caused by prematurity. He was shunted at five and a half months. He has trouble with coordination, both large and small motor delays. On the other hand he is extremely verbal. Can remember bible passages after the second reading. Also very interested in what clothes everone is wearing - will remember what I wore to a party a year ago! He started kindergarten a year late and has IEP, but is doing well.

Our middle child has no problems.

Our youngest was borderline hydrocephalus because of a pineal cyst (which was caught because I kept telling the doctors about her delays, and the obvious fact that she has a big head - off the chart big). She had a series of CT scans, MRI and a spineal tap. It has resolved itself. No need for a shunt. She is being followed by a Developmental Pediatrician, and getting early intervention therapy at our local MRDD.

So what does all this mean? Doctors, nurses and physical. occupational and speech therapists become your new friends! Make an appointment with a nuerosurgeon so you can see the scans and understand what was - and is happening.

Hydrocephalus is hard to understand, some kids/adults have lots of problems, some have no problems?!

Feel free to e-mail me, or leave a note here I will check back.
