wanting to adopt
We currently are the permenant conservators to a special needs girl. She has been with us for the past 3 1/2 years. I have been trying to find a way to adopt but we were told if we did she would loose her medicaid. We simply can't afford to do this since she has very serious medical problems. We live in Texas. Does anyone have any experience in this area? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You |

My children retained their medicaid after adoption as part of an adoption subsidy. Is this child related to you?(sometime kinship placements get poor services) Has she been involved with social services? If so, I'd check with somebody higher up to be sure you were be giving correct information. Does she qualify for disability?(SSI) Medicaid often comes with that for children also.
Lastly, have you checked with whoever heads the medicaid eligibility program for your area(usually someone in social services). Those are the only things I can think of to sugest checking. |

My three adopted children also retain their Medicaid. However, it is very important to make sure your child is qualified for social security before applying for adoption subsidy. It he qualifies for even $1 of services, he can stay on Medicaid. The whole adoption subsidy thing is complex and varies from state to state. You should get a subsidy no matter what your income is, so keep at it! The Medicaid comes along with the subsidy.
