South African Adoption

Hello there
I am researching an article on the adoption of South African babies by adoptive parents living outside South Africa. With the huge increase in the number of abandoned and orphaned babies in South Africa, the more information we can get to prospective adoptive parents the better.
Would you be prepared to pass on any advice or information based on your experiences? If so, please contact me at hannah_12_@hotmail.com.
Many thanks
Hannah

Hi,

I am from SA but have been living in the Uk for 6yrs and have recently adopted our darling daughter-who is now 2yrs.
Where abouts in SA did you adopt your twins from? How old are they?

Sarah

Hi there,

How are things going with your twins? How old are they now? Was it a complicated procedure to adopt them from SA? I come from SA and have a friend there who adopted two abandoned babies, though they are no longer babies. One is about 8 now and the other about 11. I hope things are going well for you and your little ones.

Hi Sarah,

I'm also in the UK. I left SA two years ago to come here. I have an adopted daughter who is 13 now also from SA. How are you settling in the UK? Did you get your little one from birth and did you have to wait long? My daughter has settled here very well. Just me that gets home sick lol. Where abouts in SA are you from? I'm from Durban.

Hi,

I am from Durban too.
And still very homesick-we are planning on returning in July this year to live.
Off on a months holiday there in March so that my husband can have a look around before we sell up here.
We adopted Lou 11 months ago when she was 14 months old-and she is just the best thing that has happened to us.
Where in DBN are you from?
So you adopted your child in SA-how old was she when you adopted her?

Sarah

Hi there,

I am afraid I cannot help you at all with how to adopt from SA-we adopted a little girl last Feb but we have done it all through our local Social Services and she is from UK herself.
As far as I do know-you'd have to go through a completley different procedure as it is classed as Internationl adoption-why don't you ring your local SServices and speak to them.

Sorry.
Sarah

hi Tzu & Sarah -

I'm actually an American - our twins were born in Durban though - July 3, 2002, we took them home from the hospital! I spent 4 months there - South Africa is a beautiful country - we are planning to go back when the boys are about 12 - Our adoption was a direct placement.

Michelle,

I am also an American, but reside in the UK with my South African spouse. We are interested in adopting from South Africa, but I am not sure of how to start. I have tried researching on the internet, but have not gotten very far. Could you share with us how you went about adopting your children? Did you use an agency or do it yourself? Any information to help me get started would be so appreciated.

Thanks,

Elena

Hi Sarah and Elena -

How we did the adoption - Divine Intervention I guess....and the power of prayer (you would not believe the number of churches with on their prayer list) brought us home.

The boys birthmother contacted us from our website 2 months before they were born - the rest is really a blur, but I found out it was 1) legal and 2) possible, then started talking to agencie in the U.S. - who of course, only work with orphanages. They were however able to refer me to a social worker in S.A. who was able to help us. I'm not sure it really hit me until I was on the plane in Atlanta - turns out I was sitting next the the Uncle or neighbor (I don't remember exactly) of a woman I had met on another adoption board (also looking to adoption)! The world just gets smaller!

We finalized a South African adoption, then came home. Neither we or their birthmother wanted them in foster care, so I had to commit to a minimum of 2 months there (in S.A. birthparents have 60 days to revoke consent) and due to unforeseen complications (birthfather related) wound up being there 4 months and 1 week. The city they were born in only does about 10 adoptions a year (private)...

We are still in touch with their BirthMom on a regular basis and will have contact with the Birthfather through the social worker - we hope to go back for a visit when the boys are around 12 ..but it will be an expensive trip - I now know LOTS OF STUFF I want to do and see!!!!!!!

south african adoption

Hi, I am new to this site. My husband and I are in the process of our adoption from South Africa. We are acturally going through Durban. We are currently waiting for our referral, and are very excited. I am interested in speaking to others that are in the process.

I'd love to talk to you about S.A. and Durban - I have some great ideas on where to stay, what to see, where to go (even with babies!) I was there for 4 months (and 1 week, but who's counting!) - seriously - it's a GREAT country so MUCH to see - I could spend a year there and not see enough. I know you won't be there as long ( our situation was rather unique) but do plan on spending a little extra time ... it will make you want to go back!

I'll PM you too - or you can PM me

And thanks HappyTwinsMom for the headsup - I saw Nicole post, didn't have time to reply then forgot!
