When foster-to-adopt family is investigated...

what is the process? I know of a family who has a sibling set placed in their home. They received a visit recently regarding the condition of their home (unsanitary) and the disconnect between them and one of the children. Does this sound like something that DFCS would investigate?

If it is an investigation, what is the process when it is a foster-to-adopt home? The family is concerned that DFCS might take the children.

Thanks for your responses.

Yes, since the home is a foster home, that does sound like something that DCFS would investigate. Can you imagine the flak there would be if the media heard about accusations like a child placed by DCFS living in an "unsanitary home" if they didn't investigate?

Unfortunately, DCFS can and does sometimes remove children during investigations. It depends on the nature of the complaint, state law, what DCFS finds when they come check, and the individual caseworker.

The process of an investigation should have been spelled out in either the classes they went through when they were certified, or maybe in some of the paperwork they have. Not that it'll be terribly accurate, DCFS workers tend to do whatever they think is best at the moment. But it might help.

PS - Foster parents REALLY need to pay attention to this before they're licensed, it comes up for so many people. Anyone who isn't licensed yet should pay attention to these allegation postings, and learn their rights and responsibilities before becoming licensed.

The family should check with their local Foster Parent Association. They many times have experienced foster parents who are specially trained to go through the allegation/investigation process with the families (as they are going through it).
