Question Please help with 18yr old foster adopt

I posted this on the other list. But no responses. So I am hoping with this being for social workers etc. Someone here might know.

We are wanting to adopt our 18yr old foster daughter who now has a 2 month old baby. She will finish school in a month or so and then be " emancipated" from the system. She completed the PAL program and all. And we had to wait to this age because of Bio Dad dragging things out. Blah Blah Blah. We know how that is. So anyway. What I want to know will she lose any benefits if we adopt her. Like her medicaid she has until 21yrs old, college tuition paid for etc.

Jennifer,

Because laws vary from state to state, the best person to answer this question is your FD's caseworker. He/She should be able to show you in writing what Texas' policy is regarding this. If she can't/won't then talk to the next person in the chain of command and so on until you get your answer, in writing.

My educated guess is that benefits would be terminated with an adoption. This is just what tends to happen. You take on the financial, emotional, etc. responsibilities for the child. My foster adopted son has medicaid and a small stipend until he's 18, and then it's over. Remember, this is just a guess.

I know that you could just wait for three or four more years if needed to preserve these benefits, I also understand the great peace and fulfillment that comes with the finalization of an adoption.

Hope this helps.
