books on single parent adoption?
hi guys,
I've had conversations with two women who are considering adoption this past week. Both are single professional women, and I wanted to be able to suggest a book or two that they could read that was specific to single parent adoption. is there such a thing, or a book that addresses this subject? or maybe a website specific to single parent adoption? thanks! Lisa

Books for Single Adoptive Moms
Hi.
Two books I've read are: Single Mothers by Choice - Jane Mattes, CSW Adopting on Your Own, The Complete Guide to Adopting as a Single Parent. I think I got both of them through Tapestry Books - but one may have come through Amazon (been awhile). I found that books specific to adoption were most helpful because the issues and feelings are very different between people who choose to adopt (and make single parenthhood a choice and also deal with all the adoption issues) and people who suddenly find themselves as single parents of bio kids (although Single Mothers by Choice also covers Mom's who choose to have bio kids on their own - and some issues about heading out on your own are the same). There may be more - Tapestry Books has lots of good resources. It has books covering the decision to adopt, adoption issues and also kids books about adoption. You can find it at tapestrybooks.com. Hope this helps. Tell you friends good luck. We are here if they need help. P.S. I also took some of the Adoption Learning Partners (adoptionlearningpartners.org) courses online. So if online stuff is easier, this site has some good courses. You can take them for free or there is a nominal fee to get certificates if you want them for home studies, etc. |

That second book is by Lee Varon, by the way, and I can vouch for it. I liked it a lot. It's a pretty real look at things...it has neither a discouraging tone nor a recruiting tone. It happened to help me because it confirmed a lot of what was going through my own head before reading it.
Thanks for the Tapestry books info, also...I was trying to figure out how to get the Single Moms by Choice book! |

thanks guys. I know there are issues specific to single parents and I wanted to be able to suggest a couple of sources in addition to my usual adoption book recommendations.
