Hello, I'm new to this message board, but I have been reading a lot of posts for a while now. My Husband and I would like to adopt biological twins from either in country or abroad (I live in Canada), now my question is do agencies (we have yet to contact one) allow prospective parents have the option to say that we want twins, and we don't care from what country? It must sound weird, but our hearts are set on twins, and we don't have a problem with the country they're originally from. Oh something I should probably add is that we'd prefer to adopt younger kids (up to 3 years old). Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

We went the fostering route, so I don't have direct experience, but my understanding is that most agencies ask you to pick from one of their programs, which tend to be country-specific. It certainly doesn't hurt to ask. If you are looking at waiting children in the U.S., most are over 3, but you could also try adopting twins by fostering children as they come into the system. I would love to adopt twins. There are two twins available for adoption in my state but one set is 10 year old boys and the other set is 9 year old boys. That's just a little older than DH and I wanted to go.

My wife and I would love twins but we dont know how that will work out for us. We are adopting through fostercare and Our applications stated that we are open to multiple births. we are willing to go slightly out of our age range for twins.

My understanding is that you will need to pick a country. I know that in the US some agencies will allow you to pursue 2 options at the same time (either through concurrent adoptions or 2 programs with the knowledge that you will stop one once the other has ended in an adoption). I know a lot of people doing concurrent adoptions with China and other countries given the length a China adoption is taking now. I also know several people who sign with one agency and do the paperwork for 2 of their programs and agree that once they complete one adoption then the other one will be stopped (usually domestic and an international). Keep in mind that when you do this you are talking about a lot of paperwork and a lot of money. Different countries have different dossier requirements and since the paperwork goes to the country prior to referral (in most cases) then you must do the paperwork for each country. I do not know what Canada allows with regard to this.

In terms of twins... I have heard (and I have no verification to back this up) that African countries tend to produce the most twins, followed by Asians. If you opt to go international make sure that your agency is ethical. There has been a long discussion on one of my yahoo groups about agencies manufacturing twins because of the high demand (taking to infants who are roughly the same age -- not even related -- and telling the parents that they are twins). I don't know if this is actually happening or if people are just wondering but it has been a hot topic this week.

I do think the idea of wanting to adopt twins sounds weird and though I'm not familiar with international adoption, I would think it would sound weird to a caseworker. It feels kinda like the red flag a day care provider would send up when I regulated day care as they said they wanted to open a day care "because they just loved kids".

I would really think about why you're set on twins. I can see wanting to keep a sibling group together and that may cover twins but why do they have to be twins? Just my thoughts. . . and thinking about it may help you expain it to the social worker.

Then again, new science has begun allowing birth parents to pick and choose the genetic features of babies before they're born.

I think you may have a hard time finding twins if that is all your open to. I agree that you will probably need to choose a country and then wait for twins to come up in your age group.

If you went through foster care, I imagine you would wait a while if you only want twins who are under the age of three.

And finding twins in infant domestic adoption of course would be extremely difficult. I also wonder why twins? I mean twins would be great if it happens but why not a sibling group close in age? My kids are a year apart and everyone thinks they are twins.

Just curious...why is that a red flag? I run a daycare and had no biological children of my own when I started my business. I wanted to run a daycare because I love children and feel happiest when I'm caring for them. I'm not offended you said that, I'm just curious to know why.

For international you will need to pick a country because your dossier will be different in each country. You can request twins but they are only going to be referred if they become available when your referral comes up. While twins do come up, it would be unusual to have an agency that would agree to a twins only referral. A lot of agencies are even requesting that you do not specify gender for a referral. I would look more into adopting 2 at the same time than looking for twins.

This is really funny but DH and I found a sibling group of four that includes twins! lol I don't think they're identical and one of them actually might be autistic. I just thought it was funny how I posted that I'd love twins and we pick a sibling group with twins. It wasn't intentional. Now let's see if we get approved soon.
