A poem from my birth mother
I found my birth mother three weeks ago-since then my life has taken a turn for the better and I'm happier than I ever thought possible. I imagine the same goes for her and my Grandfather. Last weekend she wrote this poem and read it to me over the phone. Its heartfelt joy is something I wanted to share with everyone. I can't wait till Easter weekend-that is when I get to meet her and my Grampa in person for the VERY FIRST TIME!!!! I wish all reunions could be like this-I wish the best for all those searching for their lost loved ones. NEVER GIVE UP HOPE!
Her Name is Marla!
So long ago, 35 years, I held her in my armsBy Donna Korb Doss 3/5/06 For the first time. She squirmed and grunted. I examined: The fingers and toes The straight little nose The blonde hair The blue eyes The lean little body And then I gave her away… She was carried from my life by a nurse. I was taken to sign the Papers of Shame. My heart crumbled and shriveled. I went to my home. I was told she went to hers. There was a gigantic hole in my soul Where a baby had been. I still loved her. Life went on, Sometimes hard, Sometimes harder. I dug a den and settled in— Unsure what I wanted, searching for purpose; Bumbling about, falling down, getting up, Remembering her. I prayed her life was happy and directed That’s what I wanted then and now. I still loved her. I thought about her every spring And calculated her age: (Present year minus 1971=4, 10, 13, 17, 24, 30, 35) I hoped she was happy. I loved her. Reached into the mailbox— “Registered, certified letter” at my new post office. ****! I hated those letters! Always something bad, something nasty. I’d wait a few days… Odd, there’s a first initial and a last name. Must really be bad! Would wait an extra day. Trudged into the P.O. and signed for the ****ed letter. Who the hell was bothering me now? Sat in the car, opened the envelope. Started to read: Didn’t seem like a law firm. “Mrs. Donna Korb Doss, My name is Cindy Soper, I am a professional adoption researcher.” They got the wrong lady! Somebody was always looking for “Mrs. Doss.” “No, I’m not related by blood, just by a foolish choice.” Read, read, read--- May 7, 1971 (lots of people born then) Omaha, NE (lots of people born there) Jewish Federation~~~~~~~ Shriveled heart begins to beat; “Birthmother;” “Nebraska won’t release records;” “Adoption researcher.” Heart filling with warm blood. Eyes filling with warm tears. Brain filling with warm realization. Her name is Marla! She’s looking for me! She doesn’t want to disrupt my disrupted life! But she wants to know… She wants to know… I LOVE HER! Phone calls! Phone calls! Smiles leaking profound joy from a restored heart. She’s okay! She’s married! She survived some awful things! Oh, Sweetheart, I never meant for those kinds of things to happen. I’m so sorry… You thought of me, also? Ohhhh…. But she’s a strong, self-made woman. What more could I hope for? Letters, e-mails, phone calls, plans for a reunion. A proud Grandpa and aunts and uncle and happy friends. And a warm, rich hope dwells where a body once grew. And this is Marla! AND I LOVE HER! A proud new mother, Donna Korb Doss |

My mother wrote me a poem on my first birthday. I have it framed and on my nightstand beside my bed. I read it everymorning when I wake up. Please keep us posted on your reunion. Lish71 Reunited with bmom for 2 1/2 years. |

That poem was beautiful. It made me cry. I am so happy for you. I will be meeting my birth mother and two sisters this Sunday, I know how you must be feeling. The only thing that I have ever wanted in my life was to see my birth mother, I feel whole and it is a wonderful feeling!
