Received original birth certificate!!
Hi,
We received my husband's original birth certificate yesterday. It contains his birth mom's name and age at the time of his birth. Could anyone advise me on what steps we can take in our search now? The only thing I have done so far is to search in the whitepages online, but so far I haven't found a match. She has probably married since and changed her last name. Does anyone know which sort of records are public that could be of use to us in our search? Any sort of tips on the steps we need to take now would be greatly appreciated. We are so excited and eager to start searching! Best regards, Sofia |

State of birth?
What state was your husband born in? Accessibility to marriage records depends on the state you are searching in. Some states have public records and some are only available to immediate family with the permission of the person names in the certificate. The marriage record would be the best way to find her current married name if she married.

If you have the birthmom's name, go to the library to the historical section where they keep birth index records, or go to vital records, and in either case, search the birth records for her birth certificate. This will have her parents name on it. Then you can start from there tracing parents' last address. If she had brothers, their last name wouldn't have changed. There is so much you can do as you already have her name. Did the birth cert. have her birthday on it? Usually it does.
I'll be glad to help you if you like. You can private message me on these boards.

another idea.......
Since you have the original birth certificate, you must have a city and state where your husband was born, hospital, too. Call the city library and ask for the reference section. (Usually librarians love a good mystery so most are eager to help.) Ask the librarian to locate the RL Polk city directory for the year your husband was born and the year after. This data is collected during a year and printed a year later. IE, 1963 data collected is printed in the 1964 directory. You want the year he was born so that you have a good shot at finding her during her pregnancy, or her family and then the year after for stability in your findings. If you get a match on the last name, it will give you all kinds of info, including the exact address. Where he was born isn't always where the family lived. Once you get a fix on the family, you can check out the schools and yearbooks at those libraries. Classmates.com is a good resource for where they are now if they are listed. Polk directories may include more than one town, city or township. Have them all checked out. You might find neighbors who can help you, too, if they remember the family using those same directories and the white pages currently. Good Luck.

Just some ideas that maybe you haven't tried yet. Now that you have a name and approximate age you can go to USsearch and key in the info. The basic info is free. Then if anything comes up you can buy a detailed report, or what I do is if anything comes up then I try all free means within that location ie. phone information, Search angel driver's records. Also in case you didn't know you can go to google.com and on the search bar put in the name and location and if there are public phone records in her name it will come up and will even give you a map to her address.ie: mary jones springfield IL on the search bar then if there is anyone there it will come up. Sometimes this is a little outdated but it is free and worth a try good luck

Michelle,
Go to the top of this thread and ask Sophia. It varies from state to state. If you are in Illinois like I am, you're only hope is to register with the state mutual consent registry. Illinois matches up all registrants with the actual sealed records. When both birth parties have made a 'match', the records are flagged and the state starts reunion process. I wish more people would use it. Alot of people were 'open' adopted as well. That means that all info is on your paperwork. This is what you recieve when you ask for your non-id info. That varies state to state too. Laurie |

Thank you so much for all the wonderful replies. We will follow up on all the tips you gave us. For the people who wondered where my husband was born and how he got hold of his original birth certificate: My husband was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1956 and we got his original birth certificate by mailing a request form which we downloaded from the from the homesite of Bureau of Vital Statistics in Columbus. We had to get the signature notarized, pay a fee of $10, and provide two copies of identification. I understand though that the law varies a great deal from state to state. In Ohio for example you can only access your original birth certificate in you were born before 1964 for some reason. Thank you once again for all the replies.

DO NOT USE US SEARCH!!!!!. There are many many negative comments about them, they will take your money and run. Look up the clerk of the courts office on the internet for your county. If records are public there, you can get alot of info such as traffic tickets adresses etc. you may also find marriage license ino. They sually offer deed and mortgage info also which can leed you to an adress.
Good luck!!!and congrats on finding a name |
