Looking for Birth Mother. My DOB 02/07/80
I’m looking for any birth relatives. I was born February 7th 1980 in Fairmont, MN. I was adopted through Lutheran Family Services in Fort Dodge Iowa. I believe that both of my birth parents were in High school at the time. Anyone with any information feel free to reply here or at vetteemt@hotmail.com

Searching
You should probably contact the adoption agency that handled your adoption and request "non-identifying" information about your birth parents. It will be very helpful in your search and give you a lot more information about your birth parents.
Iowa also has an open records policy so you should contact the agency and request a "confidential intermediary" search for your birth family. The agency will locate and contact the birth family to see if they would be interested in contact. I have already contacted them. They want $180 up front and $90 an hour to maybe or maybe not find and contact them. They will also not give me any medical history with out paying them the starting fee of $180. So with this in mind I've started searching myself.

$90 an hour?
They want $90 an hour??? That is absolutely unreasonable. You should report any unreasonable fees to the governing board over all adoption agencies in Iowa:

re
Well I finally got word from the adoption agency. They are letting my b-mom and I have non-indent letter writing. I sent the first letter about 2 weeks ago and have not hear word back. I'm normally a patient person, but the waiting seems like for ever. Oh well, I’ve waited 23 years what’s a few more weeks? So Kristine you should have received my letter by now and I can wait to hear back from you.

Welcome to the Search and Reunion Message Board,
Have both you and your birth mom given consent through a written form that would permit you to be in contact with each other directly instead of through the agency? Re:
According to the agency yes we have both given consent of contact. They did say Iowa law requires that a judge unseals your file before they can give out any identifying information, even if both parties have given consent to do so. This is why they are having us do this non-identifying letter writing, according to them 99% of the time if a judge knows that both parties have had some contact and wish to have identifying he/she will unseal the record. Then the agency will give each of us the other address.
On a side note the waiting for a reply to my first letter is excruciating. Its been 2 weeks now, so hopeful some time soon I’ll receive something. |

The most difficult part of the search is waiting for a response from a letter. Try to find things that will help you get through this stressful time. Sometimes a massage several times a week while waiting helps ... other times just talking to friends and family that are supportive of your search.

Well I talked with my adoption agency Friday and they said that my b-mom Kristine and I will have to do the non-ident letter writing for 6 months. Then at that time they will send in all the paperwork to the courts to have a judge decide if the adoption file should be opened and allow us personal contact. So now we wait again.

Response
I am sorry to hear how long the system in Iowa takes for someone to make contact with their biological relative.
