Dad was adopted from St. Vincent's Orphange in the 1930s Chicago
This is my first post on this site so I'm not even sure if I'm in the correct area or asking the "right" questions. My dad was adopted from St. Vincent's Orphanage in Chicago back in the early 1930s. I was wondering if there might be a way for me to get records (copies of) concerning his adoption. I think the Catholic Church ran St. vincent's until it closed in 1970s but I got to believe that the records are held somewhere. Please help. Thanks,
Luke |

Welcome to the forums Luke.
There are a couple of steps you can do to start the process. Illinois Adoption Laws The above link takes you to different page on this site which explains IL access to adoption records, address and details you need to start the process. IL has a state mutual consent registry. Your dad (if still living) can sign up for the registry and can also apply for non-id info, include a request for all info including letters or anything added to the file after the adoption. If you dad is not living then you can apply / sign up (pretty sure). Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago - Adoption Services Post-Adoption & Registry Services 651 W. Lake Chicago, IL 60661 Intake: (312) 655-7088 Mutual consent Adoption Registry Services are available to all members of the adoption circle: birth parents, adoptees, and adoptive families. Services include membership in the Adoption Guild, facilitating connections between birth parents and adoptive families, non-identifying background information, searches, and reunions. Do the same process with CC as noted for the state. You can also register with ISRR (google to find the link - you register they do a search of their database and if a match is found they contact you - it is free. There is also a reunion registry on this site that is free and you should post your search in that as well - look under the reunite tab to access it. Good luck and if you still run into a dead end then there are people called search angels who will try to help you - at no charge - there is a subforum on this site you can post in. They will want you to get all non id info available. Kind regards, Dickons |
