New York Adoptee Bill of Rights moves into Codes Committee
Yesterday, June 6, 2006 was hardley the day of the beast in Albany NY. Rather the forces of good were definatly in control. It was Lobby Day for Unsealed Initiative, the NY based adoption group spearheading the statewide fight for Open Records..and although, I, sadly, could not be there this time, we were exhaulted!
Bill #A9823 went to a vote in the Health Committee and was passed UNANIMOUSLY!!! The next step takes it into "Codes" for review of the bill language itself. Currrently, there is known support by 8 Code Committee members. Ten are needed to clear the Committee and then on to the BIG VOTE! SO the EASY ACTIVIST MISSION OF THE DAY? We go after the NY Assemblymembers on the Codes Committee. So here's what you do! Copy and paste this..you may,of course add anything you want, but I do try to make this EASY! If you are a relinquishing mom, or an adoptee, then please do add that in! Aslo, if you actually live in NY...also add in as they like to know that!: Dear Assemblyperson: Pass bill A9823 the Bill of Adoptee Rights. Give tax paying citizens the right to their original birth certificates. Data coming from states that have opened records in recent years indicates that very few birth parents ( less than 1% based on US and International research) want confidentiality. Many birth mothers will tell you that they were not promised confidentiality. Others will tell you they were told they would have confidentiality even though they never wanted it. Why should mothers and fathers who never raised a child prevent that child who is now an adult from access to an original birth certificate? Why should any parent prevent an adult from their birth right? The sealed record law is unfair, outdated and discriminatory. Although thousands of adoptees have searched and have reunions that work and most citizens believe adoptees should have this right, there are some non-adopted persons who want to deny adoptees this right. Do these non-adopted persons take for granted access to their birth certificates? It is disrespectful to the dignity of an adopted person to have their birth certificates sealed and hidden from them. Bill A9823 gives birth parents the option of stating they want “No Contact”. This bill is fair to all. Now is the time to change the unfair, outdated and discriminatory law that seals records. Pass this bill and bring the law up to date with norms accepted in today’s world. Sincerely, and sign your name!!! Ok now you have it copied? So start clicking on these links. Past what you have copied on the "message area". You just fill in the necessary stuff..like your name, email, etc. If you have edditted the "form" ..copy the whole think with your revisions for the next one on the list. CODE COMITTEE CHAIR: Joseph Lentol... Philip Boyle James Brennen Steven Cymbrowitz Tom Kirwan Charles D Levine Daniel J. O'Donnell Ok..that is 7 easy emails...there are more to the Code Committee, but it's a great start for today! Guess what?? You are an ACTIVIST NOW!!! |
