What state did you place in?

There are MANY reasons's why an adoptees name can appear unaltered on the Birth Index.

One reason is that your state “Duplicates” the listing – meaning that she is listed twice, once as her birth name (if given) and once as her adopted name. I am an adoptee from Texas, I appear twice on the Texas Birth Index – as does the daughter I placed…once under our birth names and once under our amended names…I

Another reason – birth happened in State A and adoption/finalization took place in State B that issues birth certificates rather than requiring the adoptive parents to obtain an amended certificate from the birth state.

Don’t assume that it was an illegal adoption because she appears on the index under her birth name – you’ll cause yourself some potentially unnecessary stress…as if the searching process isn’t stressful enough all ready.

If possible, search the index by birth date.

Do you have a copy of her/his original birth certificate? If so, many states don’t alter the birth record number when amending the name/index – you can search by the birth record number and maybe have better luck.

Brandy, How do you look on the Texas birth index? What does that involve? I know my last name at birth, all I have every been told was baby girl Kyte, but can you look up by dates?
