First contact is usually made better thru the mail. Have you considered writing a letter?
If you're dead set on making a call, you can usually get a cheap phone card at Wal-Mart.

I would advise you to write a letter instead of calling. I think you will be greeted with shock rather than the way your relative may have wanted to react. If you do write a note, I think that it should be short and sweet and register it with the post office - that way you will know when it has been received! Good luck. First contact is so important and should be well thought out!

I also think that I might have found my birth father. But what would you say in a letter?

When I was almost sure I had found my birthson, I wrote a letter. I simply said I had recieved info that made me pretty sure I was his biological mother, if he had indeed been adopted and born on______. I said I in no way wanted to cause him any problems, and it would be up to him to make contact. I then gave my address, phone. No other information about me. I also added if I had been given incorrect information, I apologized for bothering him. I felt that left it open for all possibilities--- in case he didn't know he was adopted, in case he had no desire to know about me (I prayed that wouldn't be the case!), or whatever kind of contact he wanted. It took a while, but he did call. So, my advice is to write a letter-- follow your heart and try to be patient. Everyone is at a different place in all this.

I agree give them the option to reply, some people can get scared easily. Don't give too much information. Good luck!
